Tai-Ex opening

發佈於 2021-10-20 10:29:01

The Tai-Ex opened up 36-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 16,936 on turnover of $3.5-billion N-T.

Shares in Taiwan moved sharply higher to close above the 16,900-point mark Tuesday as large tech stocks regained (恢復) their footing after losses on Monday in the wake of a rally among their counterparts on the U.S. markets overnight.

As the bellwether electronics sector attracted most investors' attention, old economy and financial stocks appeared mixed throughout the session.

The strong buying on the main board continued into the end of the session as many other tech stocks followed suit in posting gains, helping the electronics sector account for almost 60 percent of the total turnover at the end of the session.

Passengers at Taoyuan Airport could drop to below 1 million in 2021

發佈於 2021-10-20 10:29:01

Passenger numbers at Taoyuan Airport could drop below 1-million this year.

The Taoyuan International Airport Corporation says the number of passengers at the country's main international airport reached only about 600,000 in the first eight months of this year.

That makes it likely that the total for the whole year could hit an historic(歷史性) low of less than 1 million.

Before the restriction were eased, only 30 percent of the restaurants at the airport were open.

The airport says it hopes new dining rules will raise the number to 50 percent.

 Guatemala ExSoldiers Raid Congress Building

發佈於 2021-10-20 10:29:02

Former soldiers who are demanding a war-time bonus for serving in Guatemala's 1960-1996 civil war have burst onto the grounds of the country's congress building and set several vehicles afire (著火).

The protesters broke down gates leading into the building's parking lot Tuesday and torched at least three vehicles.

Some of the demonstrators apparently carried machetes, and some congress employees fled over a rooftop to escape.

Soldiers eventually showed up to force the protesters out.

The former soldiers are demanding a bonus of about $16,000 for having served in the civil war, in which at least 200,000 people died, most of them civilians.

The U.S.-backed army was responsible for most of the deaths, according to findings of an independent truth commission set up to investigate the bloodshed.

Brazil Committee on President's Pandemic Response

發佈於 2021-10-20 10:29:02

Brazilian senators are discussing details of an investigative committee's final report that will call for President Jair Bolsonaro to be indicted on criminal charges for bungling the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The outbreak in Brazil produced the world's second-highest death toll.

The latest draft of the report, which The Associated Press has reviewed, recommends Bolsonaro be indicted on 11 charges, from charlatanism(冒充內行的人;騙子) and inciting crime to homicide and genocide.

Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, and repeatedly accused the investigation of being a political instrument aimed at sabotaging him.

Critics have denounced Bolsonaro for insistently downplaying the coronavirus' severity, ignoring international health guidelines on masks and restrictions on activity designed to prevent the virus' spread, touting unproven treatments and delaying acquisition of vaccines.
