The Tai-Ex opened down 44-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
15,794 on turnover of $3.2-billion N-T.

The Tai-Ex closed below the 16,000-point mark on Thursday after early gains
eroded following the U-S Federal Reserve's decision to raise its key interest
rates as its policy-making meeting.

Market watchers say shipping stocks led the decline, as institutional
investors moved to sell a net 3.52-billion N-T in stocks.

The U-S Fed's rate hike temporarily removed uncertainty from the market, but
investors opted (選擇) to shift their attention to the economy amid fears
that rising interest rates could hurt market fundamentals.

Four military officers have attended a multilateral security forum hosted
jointly by the United States and Japan in Tokyo.

It's the first time since 2019 that Taiwan has had a presence (在場、參加) at
the forum.

The delegation included Rear Admiral Chang Shi-xing, who commands the Navy's
151st Amphibious Fleet, and Colonel Wu Zhi-xiao, who serves as the Marine
Corps' deputy chief of staff.

They was invited to the four-day Pacific Amphibious Leaders Symposium
security forum.

Nearly 70 military personnel from 18 countries took part in the event that
included visits to military bases in Japan and demonstrations of weapon
systems made by either Japan or the U-S.

Taiwan sent a delegation to the first forum in Hawaii in 2015 and a
delegation also attended 2019's event.

In its third hearing, the House panel investigating the Capitol riot is
focusing on Donald Trump's push to have his vice president reject Joe Biden's
2020 win.

AP Washington correspondent Sagar Meghani reports.

The French military says nearly 40 Islamic extremists have been killed in
drone strikes near Niger's border with Burkina Faso.

The statement released Thursday by the French said that several strikes were
launched on a column (縱隊) of motorcycles after intelligence confirmed it
was a group of jihadis.

The French force in Africa named Operation Barkhane called the strikes a
``new tactical success'' for its counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel
region.

Extremists linked to the Islamic State group are known to operate near
Niger's border with Burkina Faso.

A U.N. special envoy is warning that Haiti's police force needs immediate
help to fight crime and violence, noting that gangs have grown so powerful
they recently seized control of a local courthouse.

Helen La Lime, the top U.N. official in Haiti, said Thursday that insecurity
is rapidly deteriorating (惡化) in the country of more than 11 million
people, with an average of almost seven kidnappings reported every day.

In May alone, she said more than 200 killings and 198 abductions were
reported.

Those kidnappings included two busloads of children and three U.N. personnel
and their dependents, with one local staff member killed in a crossfire
between gangs.
