Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 244-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 14,194 on turnover of 6.1-billion N-T.
The market lost more than 380 points on Tuesday to close below the 14,000-point mark as investors took cues from a decline on Wall Street overnight.
Large-cap semiconductor stocks continued to be the focus of sell offs, while selling also spread to old economy stocks, in particular in the transportation and petrochemical sectors, to add further downward pressure on the broader market.
CDC Reporting Second Case of Monkeypox

The Centers for Disease Control is reporting Taiwan's second case of monkeypox.
According to the C-D-C, the case was an imported infection and has been confirmed in a Taiwanese man in his 30s after he arrived back in Taiwan from a business trip to the United States.
Health officials say the man was hospitalized on July 10 and alerted authorities that he may have contracted ( 感染) the virus.
His test results came back positive for the disease on Tuesday, and he remains in hospital quarantine.
The C-D-C says only the flight crew and airport staff had contact with the patient, and they have not been listed as close contacts, as they were all wearing personal protective equipment.
Wanan Air Defense Drills Slated for July 25-28

The Ministry of National Defense says this year's annual Wanan air defense drill is scheduled to be held in different areas of the island between July 25 and 28.
Civilians will be required to shelter in place (就地避難) during the exercise.
The air raid sirens will go off at 1:30PM to signal the start of the 30-minute drills on July 25 in northern Taiwan.
The drill will take place at the same time on July 26 in the center, on July 27 in the south and on July the 28 in the east and on outlying islands.
Most vehicular road traffic and pedestrian movement will be suspended, but metro services, freeway traffic, and air traffic will operate normally.
However, stricter evacuation protocols will be in place in three selected city wards.

Brazil NPO Sounds Warning on Deforestation in Amazon

A Brazilian nonprofit organization says deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon broke all records for a six month period during the first half of 2022.
The Amazon Environmental Research Institute, says satellite images of deforestation between January and June show almost 4,000 square kilometers destroyed.
The organization says the area destroyed (毀壞) in the first half of 2022 is 80% larger than the same period in 2018, the year before President Jair Bolsonaro took office.
And the institute points out that around half of the felling occurred on public lands.
