The Tai-Ex opened down 73-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 14,252 on turnover of $2.4-billion N-T.

The Tai-Ex rebounded on Wednesday, gaining more than 370 points, as market sentiment was boosted by the National Stabilization Fund's decision to support the local main board.

Market watchers say investors chose to ignore losses on Wall Street overnight and moved to pick up bargains, helping to push the main board above the 14,300 point mark at the close of the trading day.

That close was higher than the five-day moving average of 14,283 points.

The Taipei City Department of Health says a woman diagnosed with hantavirus hemorrhagic fever was most likely infected by inhaling the virus when cleaning up rodent waste.

The woman is the first person to have contracted the disease in Taipei this year.

According to the department's Disease Control Section, she probably inhaled (吸入) the hantavirus from rodent urine, droppings or saliva when she was cleaning up at her residence.

The patient developed a fever, headache, muscle soreness and mild diarrhea, and was admitted to hospital.

City health officials say the woman has now recovered from the disease and members of her family did not develop any related symptoms.

A World Boxing Council championship belt belonging to former South African President Nelson Mandela has been stolen from a museum in Soweto.

The belt was given to Mandela by American boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard during one of his visits to South Africa.

It was one of many artifacts inside the Nelson Mandela National Museum museum, a major tourist attraction for local and international travelers.

Mandela, a former amateur boxer, revered the belt and it was prominently displayed in the museum in a house where he once lived in Soweto township, west of Johannesburg.

Police say no suspects have been arrested and they have appealed for (呼籲,懇求) any information about the belt.
