Four More BA.5 Subvariant Cases Reported in Shipyard

The Central Epidemic Command Center says four more contacts (接觸者) of an employee at a shipyard (造船廠) in Kaohsiung have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The employee tested positive for the coronavirus Omicron BA.5 subvariant (亞型變異株) this past weekend and the epidemic command center has been testing contacts and other employees at the shipyard for the virus.
The latest positive tests bring the total number of cases connected to the employee to 16 - after two of the man's relatives and 10 of the 118 employees tested positive earlier this week.
Genome sequencing is still being carried out on all of the positive cases to determine whether it is a BA.5 cluster infection (群聚感染).
Wanan Air Defense Drill Set for South this Afternoon

The Wanan air defense exercise will be taking place in southern Taiwan this afternoon.
Air raid sirens will be going off at 1:30PM for the 30-minute drill in Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung.
Most road traffic and civilians will be required to shelter in place (就地掩護).
However, stricter evacuation protocols (規定) are being applied to Tung-Chiao Village in Tainan's Yongkang District.
That means private vehicles will not only be required to be parked but their drivers and passengers will also need to step out and follow instructions to find shelters.
The air raid drill will be taking place in Hualien, Taitung, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu tomorrow.
7.3 earthquake shakes northern Philippines, felt in capital

A strong earthquake shook the northern Philippines including the crowded capital region this morning.
There are no immediate reports of major damage or casualties (傷亡).
The 7.3 magnitude quake was centered around Abra province, a mountainous area in the north, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (火山和地震研究所) said.
People ran out of buildings as the ground shook in Manila.

Pope Francis is praying in Canada for healing from the "terrible effects of colonization (殖民時代).''
He offered the prayer as he led a pilgrimage (朝聖之旅) to a Canadian lake that has been known to Native peoples for centuries as a sacred place of healing.
It follow on his apology the previous day for the "catastrophic (災難性的)'' effects of Canada's residential schools on Indigenous (原住民) families.
More than 150,000 Native children in Canada were taken from their homes and made to attend government-funded Christian schools from the 19th century until the 1970s
