Taipei Taking Two-Pronged Approach to Cluster Infections
發佈於 2021-06-21 13:19:04
The Taipei City government is taking a two-pronged approach to contain (阻止) a local cluster infection.

Deputy Mayor Vivian Huang says that the city is conducting rapid testing and administering vaccinations to staffers, at the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Company.

The company, which also runs a major produce distribution center in the city, has confirmed that 20 staffers and 18 vendors are infected.

Company officials say roughly 200 employees who tested negative for COVID-19 on PCR tests will undergo vaccination today, and the rest will be completed within 3 days.

Deputy Mayor Huang says the central government has already approved use of the additional 10 percent of vaccines allocated to Taipei for this purpose.

Huang says the company's distribution center in Wanhua District will continue operations, but strict safety measures will be in place.

發佈於 2021-06-21 13:19:04
A new KMT survey finds that most people want the government to offer more coronavirus financial aid (紓困).

The study finds that 75 percent of respondents feel that current financial relief measures are not helping, compared to 21 percent who say they are.

The KMT says this dissatisfaction is widespread, and crosses party lines.

It is urging the Tsai administration to pay more attention to public opinion, and to provide more aid to those in need.

Park officials are reminding the public that the scenic areas are closed for public health reasons, and urge people not to let down their guard against the coronavirus.

U.S. Envoy Hopes North Korea Responds Positively On Offered Talks
發佈於 2021-06-21 13:19:04
U.S. President Joe Biden's special envoy (特使) for North Korea says he hopes to see a positive reaction from the North soon.

It's regarding U.S. offers for talks, after the North Korean leader ordered officials to prepare for both dialogue and confrontation.

Sung Kim, Biden's special representative for North Korea, is in Seoul, to speak with South Korean and Japanese officials about the U.S.'s stalled diplomacy with the North, over its nuclear program and U.S.-led sanctions.

The trilateral talks followed a North Korean political conference last week, where leader Kim Jong Un called for stronger efforts to improve his nation's economy.

North Korea was further battered last year by pandemic border closures, and is now facing worsening food shortages.

Biden And Congress Face A Summer Grind To Create Legislation
發佈於 2021-06-21 13:19:04
The act of governing seemed to happen at the speed of presidential tweets, when former U.S. President Donald Trump was in the White House.

But U.S. President Joe Biden is settling in for a summer struggle of legislating on his big infrastructure proposals (大規模的基礎設施提案).

The U.S. Congress is grinding through the details, and trying to shape Biden's ideas into bills that could become law.

At the same time, the president is negotiating with opposition Republicans over a potential bipartisan deal.

The White House will launch a fresh week of new talks beginning on Monday in the U.S., but Biden is also keeping his options open for a Democrats-only approach.

Ethiopia Votes In Greatest Electoral Test Yet For Abiy
發佈於 2021-06-21 13:19:05
Ethiopia is voting today, in the greatest electoral test yet for Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The election (選舉) comes as insecurity and logistical problems mean ballots won't be cast in more than 100 constituencies, of the 547 across the country.

The election is the centerpiece of a reform drive by Abiy, whose rise to power in 2018 seemed to signal a break with decades of authoritarian rule and led to his Nobel Peace Prize.

But opposition groups have accused Ethiopia's ruling party of harassment and threats of violence that echo past abuses.

And Abiy is facing growing international criticism over the war in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region.

Abiy's Prosperity Party is widely expected to cement its hold on power in the legislative elections.
