Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened down 3-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,696 on turnover of $3.3-billion N-T.
The Tai-Ex followed most other regional markets and lost ground on Thursday following a retreat (撤退、退縮) on Wall Street overnight as crude oil prices rose sharply.
Eastern Taiwan Rocked by Tremors

More earthquakes have shaken parts of eastern Taiwan this morning.
The Central Weather Bureau says a magnitude 4 earthquake occurred at 9:08am.
The epicenter was 66.9-km south-southwest of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 9.2km.
The tremors were felt most strongly in Hualien and Taitung Counties, which both registered a 3 on the CWB's intensity (強度) scale.
Another smaller earthquake occurred just a minute later.
The magnitude 3.7 quake was centered 70.9km north-northeast of Taitung County Hall, at a dept of 26.9 km.
This second quake registered an intensity of 2 in Taitung County.

Parents Shun Outdoor Activities for Kids During Coronavirus

A survey by the Child Welfare League Foundation shows that fewer parents have allowed their children to play outdoors since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the poll, more than 70-per cent of parents said they do not take their children outdoors to play because of the pandemic.
The poll showed that 36-per cent of respondents (受訪者、回信者) said their children have no one to play with because of fears of infection.
While 30.1-per cent of respondents said their children play outside less than before.
EU Moving to Rein In Tech Firms

European Union officials have agreed a landmark (標誌性的) deal designed to rein in the power of the world's biggest tech firms.
The Digital Markets Act now heads to the European Parliament for final approval.

Ethiopia Gov Announces Truce in Tigray

The Ethiopian government on Thursday announced what it called an ``indefinite humanitarian truce (休戰、停戰,)'' in its war-ravaged Tigray region, saying the action was necessary to allow unimpeded relief supplies into the area.
A government statement urged fighters loyal to Tigray's fugitive leaders ``to desist from all acts of further aggression and withdraw from areas they have occupied in neighboring regions.''
Months of political tensions between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and the Tigray leaders who once dominated Ethiopia's government exploded into war in November 2020.
The war is believed to have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of millions.
Ethiopia's government has faced growing international pressure to ease restrictions on the flow of humanitarian aid into the northern region of Tigray.
Peru Former Presidnet Banned from Leaving Country

A Peruvian judge has banned former President Alberto Fujimori from leaving the country for 18 months as soon as he leaves a prison where he has been serving a 25-year sentence for murder.
Fujimori is expected to be released soon under a Constitutional Court order that last week revived ( 使復活) a humanitarian pardon granted in 2017 by then-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
Once released, the former president must face a new trial on charges of being the intellectual author of the murder of six peasants during his 1990-2000 administration.
