Tai-Ex opening

發佈於 2022-04-07 10:41:13

The Tai-Ex opened down 92-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,430 on turnover of 5.7-billion N-T.

The market lost ground on Wednesday, following heavy losses on Wall Street overnight.

The bellwether electronics sector led the decline, with the sector losing 1.41-per cent, as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ended the day down 1.87-per cent.

However, financial stocks helped to anchor (使固定,繫住) the main board, on hopes that higher interest rates will boost financial institutions' returns on overseas investments.

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says the Central Epidemic Command Center is evaluating plans to have people with light coronavirus symptoms to quarantine at home if the number of domestic cases continues to rise.

According to the health minister, officials are currently drafting related guidelines, but several "major questions" still need to be resolved before such a policy can be implemented (實施).

Taiwan

The Central Weather Bureau says a tropical depression that has formed east of the Philippines could develop into a tropical storm.

The tropical depression is currently located some 2,000-kilometers east-southeast of the island of Mindanao and is moving in southwesterly direction at 8-kilometers-an-hour.

It's packing sustained wind speeds of 54-kilometers-an-hour, with gusts of up to 82-kilometers-an-hour.

The weather bureau's forecast center says the depression could develop into a tropical storm later this evening at the earliest.

If it continues on it's current projected path, it will veer (轉向) in a northwesterly direction from late today, but the weather bureau says it is not expected to have any major effect on Taiwan.

UN to Vote on Suspending Russia from Human Rights Council

發佈於 2022-04-07 10:41:14

The U.N. General Assembly will vote today on whether to suspend Russia from the U.N.'s premier human rights body.

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield made the call for Russia to be stripped of its seat on the 47-member Human Rights Council in the wake of videos and photos of streets in the town of Bucha strewn (散落) with corpses of what appeared to be civilians.

The videos and reporting from the town have sparked global revulsion and calls for tougher sanctions on Russia, which has vehemently denied responsibility.

The resolution's approval requires a two-thirds majority of assembly members that vote ``yes'' or ``no.''

Russia and the other four veto-wielding permanent members of the U.N. Security Council _ Britain, China, France, and the United States _ all currently have seats on the Human Rights Council, which the U.S. rejoined this year.
