CECC Urging Use of Contact Tracing App

The Central Epidemic Command Center is urging people to download the Taiwan Social Distancing App to help efforts to trace coronavirus transmission chains (傳播鏈).

According to Health Minister Chen Shih-chung, the omicron variant requires a more efficient (更有效率) approach to tracing contacts of confirmed cases (確診病例), and as such the epidemic command center is focused more on promoting the app.

The app first introduced in May of last year and notifies users when they had been near an infected person.

Figures (數字) show that some 6-million people have downloaded the app and the epidemic command center is hoping that the number of users will increase to more than 12-million.


 Taiwan and Poland to Hold concert for Ukraine

Taiwan and Poland will jointly hold a benefit concert for Ukraine this coming Sunday at the National Concert Hall in Taipei.

Tickets for the "Pray for Ukraine -- Solidarity with Ukraine" charity concert (慈善音樂會) are on sale now.

According to Polish Office in Taipei, after deducting expenses, all proceeds (收入) from the concert will fund relief work to help Ukrainian refugees, through donations made by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The office says it initiated the idea of the concert, which is being organized by the Taipei Philharmonic Foundation (愛樂基金會) for Culture and Education and directed by the foreign ministry and the Ministry of Culture.

The concert will be conducted by Wu Yao-yu, who is currently the associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra.

Shanghai sees first signs of possible easing (放鬆) of restrictions as a strict lockdown continues.

Shanghai has discharged (釋出) over 11,000 recovered COVID-19 patients and health authorities emphasize that they must be allowed to return home despite the lockdown.

 Macron and Le Pen to fight for presidency

Emmanuel Macron has won the first round of the French election and far-right rival (對手) Marine Le Pen will fight him for the presidency for a second time.

Macron told cheering supporters,"Make no mistake, nothing is decided."

He is heading for a convincing first-round victory, but opinion polls suggest the run-off (第二次投票) could be much closer.

Le Pen called on every non-Macron voter to join her and "put France back in order".

With 96% of results counted, Emmanuel Macron had 27.4% of the vote, while Marine Le Pen 24 % .


 Queen chats with COVID-19 patients, nurses at UK hospital

Queen Elizabeth II, after her own recent bout with COVID-19, empathized (表示同理心) with patients, doctors and nurses at a London hospital last week.

The monarch (君王) spoke to patients and staff at the Royal London Hospital during a virtual visit that marked the official dedication (獻禮) of the Queen Elizabeth Unit.

It's, a 155-bed critical care facility built in just five weeks at the height of the pandemic.

Elizabeth tested positive for COVID-19 in February and suffered what Buckingham Palace described as "mild cold-like symptoms.''
