The Tai-Ex opened up 70-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 15,687
on turnover of $3.98-billion N-T.

The market took a beating on Thursday, losing almost 400 points as investors
reacted to a plunge on Wall Street overnight after the U-S reported an
8.3-per cent year-on-year increase in the consumer price index for April.

The bellwether electronics sector came under heavy pressure amid rising
concerns over a rate hike cycle launched by the U-S Federal Reserve, while
sell-offs were also seen in the financial and old economy sectors, in
particular in the transportation sector.

Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corporation says the results of a WHO-led clinical
trial of its COVID-19 vaccine has now entered the analysis phase.

The Taiwan vaccine maker says data from the World Health Organization's Phase
3 Solidarity Trial Vaccines program is currently being studied, after
18-thousand people were injected with either two doses of the Medigen
vaccine, or a placebo (安慰劑).

The trial was conducted in the Philippines, Colombia and Mali.

According to the WHO, the STV program is a randomized controlled clinical
trial that aims to evacluate the efficacy and safety of promising new
COVID-19 vaccines.

Medigen says official results of the trials will be announced by the World
Health Organization.

The WHO has so far issued an emergency use listing for 10 COVID-19 vaccines.

Currently, only Taiwan, Paraguay and Somaliland, have granted emergency use
authorization for the Medigen vaccine.

North Korea says six people have died and nearly 190,000 are under quarantine
following a rapid spread of fever across the nation in recent weeks.

The announcement comes just a day after it first acknowledged a coronavirus
outbreak two years after the pandemic began.

It wasn't immediately clear how many of the cases were COVID-19.

The North only says that one of the six people who died was confirmed to have
been infected with the omicron variant.

Experts say a failure to slow infections could have serious consequences
(結果、後果) because the country has a poor health care system and its 26
million people are believed to be mostly unvaccinated.

The U.N. children's agency says the war in Ukraine is a ``child rights
crisis'' where education is under attack, nearly 100 youngsters have been
killed in just the last month, and millions more have been forced to flee
their homes.

Omar Abdi is UNICEF's deputy executive director.

He told the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that children are paying ``an
unconscionably (道德上不可接受的) high price'' in the war, with 239 confirmed
killed and 355 injured since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

He added that the actual numbers are much higher. Abdi says the attacks must
stop, saying children's futures ``hang in the balance.''

Images of the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy have been
captured (獲得,取得) for the first time.
