President Tsai Ing-wen is urging people affected by the new quarantine requirements to check their contact history and take the initiative (採取主動) to cooperate with epidemic prevention measures.

The new measures apply to inpatients discharged from the Taoyuan General Hospital between January 6 and 19.

According to Tsai, she believes as long as everyone carefully adheres to and implements epidemic prevention measures, she remains confident that Taiwan will be able to overcome the latest challenge posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The president also says while she understands that scale of the new quarantine requirements is very large and will inevitably (不免) cause inconvenience, the public must work together on the basis of "mutual
understanding and assistance."

A U-S aircraft carrier group led by the U-S-S Theodore Roosevelt has entered the South China Sea.

The U-S Indo-Pacific Command says the strike group entered the South China Sea to "conduct routine operations to ensure freedom of the seas and build partnerships that foster maritime security (培養海上安全)."

The aircraft carrier group's arrival in the area comes as the U-S Department of State said Washington "notes with concern" the pattern of ongoing Chinese attempts to intimidate Taiwan.

And the state department statement went on to say that "Beijing should engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan's democratically elected representatives."

In international news,

The Biden administration is reinstating coronavirus travel restrictions on most non-US citizens entering the country from the UK, parts of Europe and Brazil.

Jagruti Dave reports from Washington.

Scotland's leader says she intends to hold a "legal referendum" on independence from the U-K if she wins Scottish elections scheduled for May.

Such a move would put First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on a constitutional collision course (衝突) with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who opposes another secession (分裂國家) vote.

A new binding referendum requires the U-K government's approval, and Johnson is insisting that he'll say no.

However, Sturgeon says if her Scottish National Party wins a majority in the Scottish Parliament in May it will pass legislation allowing for a new referendum.

Israel has opened its embassy in the United Arab Emirates, following through on last year's US-brokered agreement to establish full diplomatic ties with the Gulf country.

Israel's Foreign Ministry says the embassy will be in a temporary office while a permanent location is prepared.

According to Israeli officials, the opening of the new embassy will allow the broadening (開放) of what already are warm ties between Israel and the U-A-E.

Since formally establishing ties in September, the two countries have already established direct flights and exchanged numerous trade delegations, while thousands of Israeli tourists have visited the U-A-E.

And finally,

A new 5,000-lira bank note is going into circulation in Syria as the country reels from 10 years of conflict and a crippling economic crisis.

The new bank note is the largest on the market.

Syria's currency has been on a downward spiral since the conflict began in 2011.

Then the lira went for 47 liras to the dollar, but now it's up to trading at 1,250 liras to the dollar.

The currency crash has sent prices of food and basic goods soaring (高漲) across the country.
