The Tai-Ex opened up 8-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 15,955 on turnover of 6-billion N-T.

The Tai-Ex lost ground on Monday, bucking the regional trend as other Asian markets rise amid some hopes for recovering economies slammed by the coronavirus pandemic, as attention turns to the upcoming company earnings.

President Tsai Ing-wen is calling on the public to help support the people of Taoyuan, as the city is now on high alert due to the cluster coronavirus infections at the city's general hospital.

According to Tsai, people should remember "lessons from the SARS epidemic in 2003" and unite (團結) to stop the spread of the pandemic and both the "central and local governments need to work together to overcome the challenges."

Tsai also voiced her support for anti-epidemic prevention measures that have been announced by Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan - saying the city will enjoy the full support of the central government.

Over 70-per cent of employees here in Taiwan feel generally satisfied with their jobs, while only 3.7-per cent are dissatisfied - that, according to the results of a survey by the Ministry of Labor.

According to the annual survey on workers' living and employment conditions, 71.2-per cent of respondents were largely (大多) satisfied with their jobs for the period surveyed, up 0.9-percentage points from the previous year's survey.

Gender equality at work was the aspect (方面;層面) employees were most satisfied with followed by good working relationships with colleagues.

However, the major sources of job dissatisfaction were employee performance evaluation and promotion systems, followed by wages and workload.

The first case of the COVID-19 strain known as the Brazil P1 variant has been detected in the United States.

Allies of jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny are calling for new protests next weekend to demand his release, following a wave of demonstrations across the country.

Rallies took place Saturday in over 100 cities in what observers said were the largest in years.

A human rights group said over 3,700 people were detained (拘留,扣押).

Navalny's supporters urged protesters to keep up the pressure with rallies called for Sunday, Jan. 31.

Navalny was arrested Jan. 17 as he returned to Russia from Germany, where he had spent nearly five months recovering from nerve-agent poisoning he blames on the Kremlin.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is working from isolation at home a day after announcing he's tested positive for COVID-19.

The announcement comes as his country topped 150-thousand confirmed deaths, the fourth-highest in the world.

Lopez Obrador has been criticized (批評,批判;指責) for his handling of Mexico's pandemic and for not setting an example of prevention in public.

He said Sunday on his official Twitter account that his symptoms are mild and he is under medical treatment.
