The Tai-Ex opened down 181-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 15,519 on turnover of 8.9-billion N-T.

The market closed moderately (適度地) higher on Wednesday on the back of sustained interest in the bellwether electronics sector.

But selling emerged in large cap stocks across the board as the main index neared the 15,900 point mark.

And although Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing continued to slide, buying rotated to other electronics sector sector stocks which gave some support to the broader market.
The Ministry of National Defense says four Chinese military aircraft have entered Taiwan's southwest air defense identification zone.

The incursions mark the sixth consecutive day that Chinese planes had entered the area.

Defense officials say two Y-8 anti-submarine planes, a Y-8 electronic warfare plane and a Y-8 tactical reconnaissance plane entered the airspace between southwestern Taiwan and the Dongsha Islands in the South China Sea.

The Air Force scrambled fighter jets, broadcast radio warnings and deployed (配置、部署) air defense missile systems to track the Chinese aircraft before that left the area.

Google says it's planning to add another office in the Banqiao District in 2023.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has confirmed the Biden administration is freezing (停止) planned arms sales to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Blinken was confirmed by the US Senate as America's top diplomat this week.

Our Washington correspondent Giles Gibson has more.

Brazil's Vice President Hamilton Mourao says that the ongoing (進行中) military-led operation to curb illegal deforestation and fires in the Amazon rainforest will end April 30.

Mourao defended on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum the success of Operation Green Brazil 2, which launched last May, and saw deployment of thousands of soldiers across the Amazon.

But critics of President Jair Bolsonaro's government have said the military operation has failed to clamp down on rampant illegal logging.

Government data showed that just over 11,000 square kilometers of forest disappeared between July 2019 and August 2020, up 9.5% compared to the previous year.

Maourao said conclusion of the program means environmental agencies will once again be responsible for monitoring the country's rainforest, and the region's sustainable development depends on private-sector and international investment.
A woman has sold a doll she crocheted of U-S senator Bernie Sanders for over 20,000 U-S dollars.

Tobey King donated her earning to charity Meals on Wheels in Vermont.

It comes after Sanders went viral on social media for his simple Inauguration Day fashion choices of quirky (古怪的,獨特的) brown mittens and an over-sized olive green coat.
The internet has taken to creating memes of the senator since.

46-year-old King said her donation was inspired by Sanders, whose campaign created sweatshirts with the meme on them and donated the proceeds to Meals on Wheels.
She had initially posted photos of the 9-inch doll on her Instagram account, and they garnered thousands of likes and comments.

By Saturday, she posted the doll on eBay and auctioned it for 20,300 dollars.
