Human rights groups are demanding the release of human rights activists detained in China.
The rights groups rallied in front of the Liberty Square public plaza in Taipei last night, chanting slogans calling for the release of the detainees and prepared sky lanterns for good luck to honor the victims.
The event was organized by Amnesty International Taiwan and members of some nine local human rights groups participated in the event to show their support for the detainees before the arrival of the Year of the Ox this Friday.
According to the Amnesty International Taiwan, many detained human rights activists detained in China are deprived of (被剝奪) their right to contact their lawyers and some of their legal representatives are even threatened by Chinese authorities to back out.
The Ministry of Labor says the number of furloughed workers declined by 748 in the first week of February, with the manufacturing sector seeing the largest decline.
Figures show the number of workers on unpaid leave after reaching agreements with their employers totaled 3,703 as of February 8, down from 4,451 reported on February 1.
While the number of companies that implemented (實施) unpaid leave programs decreased by 62 to 344 over the same period.
According to labor officials, in the first week of February, the manufacturing sector saw the biggest drop in furloughed workers, down more than 500 from the previous week.
However, the sector still had the most workers furloughed as of February 8, standing at 1,197.
And that was ahead of the transportation/warehousing sector and the support services sector.

Colombia will register hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants and refugees who are currently living in the country without papers.
The move is a bid to provide them with legal residence permits and facilitate (促成、促進) their access to health care and legal employment opportunities.
President Ivan Duque says through a new temporary protection statute, Venezuelan migrants who are in the country illegally will be eligible for 10-year residence permits, while migrants who are currently there as temporary residents will be able to extend their stay.
The new measure could benefit up to one million Venezuelan citizens who are currently living in Colombia without proper papers, as well as hundreds of thousands who need to extend temporary visas.
Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has announced a Cabinet reshuffle.
The new Cabinet includes rebel ministers as part of a peace deal that transitional (過渡性的) authorities stuck with a rebel alliance last year.
The move comes after Hamdok dissolved his Cabinet on Sunday as Sudan's ruling Sovereign Council appointed three representatives of the Sudan Revolutionary Front as new members.
Sudan is on a path to democracy after a popular uprising led the military to overthrow longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.
A transitional military-civilian government is now in power, trying to end decades-long rebellions in various parts of the country.
