The Tai-Ex opened up 45-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 16,870 on turnover of $4.5-billion N-T.

The market lost ground on Tuesday after Wall Street closed down overnight following a muted (缺乏熱情的,淡漠的) day of trading.

However, most other Asian markets traded higher on the back of growing hopes for a global economic rebound, despite surging coronavirus cases in many places.

The Navy has launched the island's first domestically built landing platform dock.

The amphibious transport dock has been named "Yu Shan" after Taiwan's highest peak.

It's the Navy's first L-P-D in the 10,000-ton category and was built by shipbuilder C-S-B-C at a cost of 4.6-billion N-T.

The prototype is expected to enter service in the first half of next year and will be replacing the Navy's "Hsu Hai" amphibious transport dock, which has been in service for 50 years.

The Navy says the vessel will be used to support amphibious operations and transport missions, and serve as a hospital ship for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (救濟) missions in peacetime.

President Tsai Ing-wen has met with several members of Taiwan's Tokyo Olympics team.

Tsai met with athletes who have already qualified to compete at the Games and some of the coaches who'll be accompanying them during a visit to the National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung.

The president thanked them for their hard-work and for "inspiring (鼓舞人心的) the Taiwanese people with their unshakeable fighting spirit."

And Tsai said while she understands that "competing internationally during a pandemic is not easy," she hopes they "will be rewarded with the fruits of their labor" and went on to say that all of Taiwan be "cheering them on" in Tokyo this summer.

Tsai also posed for a group photo with the Olympic team.

Thirty-one Taiwanese athletes have so far qualified to compete in Tokyo and they will be competing in nine sports, including archery, track and field, swimming, and gymnastics.

An Iranian nuclear negotiator says Tehran will begin enriching uranium up to 60% purity after an attack on its Natanz nuclear facility.

That's a higher level than the program has enriched to before but remains short of weapons-grade.

The announcement marks a significant escalation after the act of sabotage (毀壞,破壞) suspected to have been carried out by Israel, damaged centrifuges.

Iran's foreign minister earlier warned that the weekend assault could hurt ongoing negotiations over its tattered atomic deal with world powers.

Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, though the West and the International Atomic Energy Agency say Tehran had an organized military nuclear program up until the end of 2003.

The White House says it will withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan by September 11th.

US correspondent Nick Harper reports.
