Drunk Driver Charged After Killing Pedestrian

發佈於 2021-07-06 13:58:04

A Taichung man who killed a pedestrian while driving under the influence (酒駕) has been charged.

The 30-year-old man surnamed Fang was driving home after having consumed alcohol in early May, when he struck a 70-year-old woman, causing severe injuries resulting in death.

Investigators determined that after the collision (車禍), Fang drank more alcohol purchased at a nearby convenience store, in an effort to mislead police.

He had also been detained by police just a day earlier for driving under the influence, and was already facing charges for public endangerment.

Prosecutors have now gathered enough evidence to press charges, and Huang now faces additional charges of public endangerment causing death.

Taliban Wins Close Consulates; Tajikistan Reinforces Border

發佈於 2021-07-06 13:58:04

A surge of Taliban wins in northern Afghanistan has caused some countries to close consulates (領事館) in the area, while Tajikistan is calling more people to reinforce (加強) its southern border.

Nearly 1,000 Afghan soldiers have fled the Taliban advances by crossing the border into Tajikistan, which says it is letting them cross out of humanitarian concern.

The Taliban have made relentless territorial wins since mid-April, when U.S. President Joe Biden announced the last U.S. and NATO troops would leave Afghanistan.

With their victories, the Taliban are putting pressure on provincial cities and gaining control of key transportation routes.

Meanwhile, the Afghan government has resurrected militias with brutal histories, that raise the specter of more devastation to come.

Press Watchdog Puts Hungarian Pm Orban On 'Predators' List

發佈於 2021-07-06 13:58:04

Press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders has put Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on its list of "predators".

He is the first Western European leader named in the group's lineup of heads of state or government who "crack down massively" on press freedom (鎮壓言論自由).

The list published yesterday includes 37 leaders.

Its new additions include Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the prime minister of Bangladesh, and Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam.

The group's leader says the world should recognize the positive contributions of an independent media and should not allow the practices of the "predators" on its list to become normalized.

New South Wales state leaders say the extension through July 16th was made on health advice, because a number of cases were still infectious (有傳染性).

Twenty-seven new infections reported today were from the delta variant (Delta異種病毒), which is considered more contagious than the original coronavirus or other variants.

Currently, only 9% of Australian adults are fully vaccinated.
