Central Bank Leaves Interest Rates Unchanged for 6th Consecutive Quarter

發佈於 2021-09-24 16:17:03

The central bank has opted to leave its key interest rates (利率) unchanged for the sixth consecutive quarter.

The bank's decision to maintain its monetary policy (貨幣政策) following its quarterly policymaking meeting had been widely anticipated, as private consumption has been negatively affected by the recent domestic coronavirus outbreak.

The bank has retained (維持) the discount rate (重貼現率)at 1.125-per cent, the lowest in history.

The rate on accommodations with collateral (擔保放款融通利率) remains unchanged at 1.5-per cent, while the rate on accommodations without collateral (短期融通利率) stays at 3.375-per cent.

According to market analysts, because consumer prices here in Taiwan have remained stable, the central bank is in no hurry to raise interest rates.

Electricity Rates Remain Unchanged

發佈於 2021-09-24 16:17:03

The Ministry of Economic Affairs is keeping basic electricity rate at the current level of 2.6253 N-T per kilowatt-hour.

The move marks the seventh consecutive time (連續七次) the ministry has opted to keep the rate unchanged.

And that's the longest period the rate has remain unchanged since 2015, when the legislature passed new regulations on how electricity prices should be calculated.

The last time the electricity rate was changed was in April of 2018.

The decision was made by the Electricity Tariff Review Committee (電費費率評審委員會), which meets twice a year to review electricity rates.

The committee has unanimously agreed (一致同意) to keep the current rate, citing the need to maintain stable electricity prices as the island's economy is continuing to recover from a surge in domestic coronavirus cases that began in May.

UN summit seeks to fix food's many problems, but draws fire

發佈於 2021-09-24 16:17:03

Nations, companies and corporations are pledging billions of dollars to feed the world in connection with an ambitious United Nations food systems summit.

Thursday's food systems summit was held as part of the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting of world leaders.

The food systems summit aimed to tackle hunger, nutrition, environmental sustainability (環境永續) and inequality.

According to the U.N., more than 2 billion people don't have enough to eat, while 2 billion are overweight or obese.

And nearly a third of the food that gets produced gets thrown away.

The summit drew speeches from more than 85 presidents and prime ministers and garnered some big-ticket financial commitments.

Among them: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pledged $900 million US. dollars, and the United States announced it would spend $10 billion over five years.

But some grassroots anti-hunger groups (草根反飢餓組織) and food experts blasted (抨擊) the event as too corporate, tech-focused and top-down.
