Canada Announces Diplomatic Boycott of Beijing Olympics

發佈於 2021-12-09 11:12:02

Canada has announced that it will also be participating in a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The North American country joins the US, the UK, and Australia, in confirming that government officials will not be attending the games, to protest Chinese human rights abuses.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his country is "extremely concerned" and China "should not be surprised" that Canada "will not be sending any diplomatic representation.``

Rights groups have called for a full-blown boycott of the Beijing Winter Games, citing Chinese human rights abuses against its Uyghur minority in the northwest Xinjiang province, which some have called genocide (種族滅絕).

They also point to Beijing's suppression (鎮壓) of democratic protests in Hong Kong and a sweeping crackdown on dissent in the semi-autonomous territory.
