The Tai-Ex opened up 17-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,686 on turnover of 4-billion N-T.

The Tai-Ex lost ground on Monday as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing came under heavy pressure, contributing to a broader decline across the market.

And analysts say in addition to (附加) the losses seen in the tech sector, investors also remained cautious about the market's future movement due to the rapid spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant in the United States and Europe.

 Report Cites Safety Violations for Academia Sinica Coronavirus Case

Academia Sinica has concluded that safety violations were to blame for a coronavirus case at one of its laboratories.

The researcher was handling the virus at the lab when she become infected with the disease.

According to Academia Sinica, the researcher was not wearing proper protective gear while conducting experiments and several areas in the lab become contaminated (污染) after researchers were allowed to improperly handle coronavirus- nfected mice.

The researcher also removed her face mask before taking off the rest of her protective gear.

The epidemic command center is slated to meet with an independent investigation committee looking into the incident on Thursday.


 DPP and LDP to Hold Trade Talks

Representatives from the D-P-P and Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party are slated to (計劃要) meet virtually this Friday to discuss trade issues.

According to the D-P-P, its delegation to the talks will be headed by lawmakers Luo Zhi-cheng and Chiu Chih-wei.

The full agenda has not been released.

But the D-P-P says the long-standing issue of an import ban on some Japanese food products from five prefectures affected by the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster is on the agenda.

The talks come as Tokyo is seeking to lift that ban.

The World Economic Forum is again delaying its annual meeting of world leaders, business executives and other elites in Davos, Switzerland.

The decision comes amid new uncertainties (不確定性) about the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The forum, which repeatedly delayed, moved and finally canceled last year's event, says the previously planned Jan. 17-21 gathering in the alpine town will now take place in ``early summer'' _ without giving specifics.

Founder Klaus Schwab said the forum still plans to host a ``digital convening of leaders from business, government and civil society.''

The media-friendly Davos conference had served as a global stage for world leaders to meet and executives to talk possible deals.

 Peng Shuai tells paper she never wrote of being assaulted

Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai has denied saying she was sexually assaulted.

The statement contradicts with a November social media post attributed to her that accused a former top Communist Party official of forcing her into sex.

The newspaper Lianhe Zaobao posted video of Peng it says was taken Sunday in Shanghai in which she says she has been mainly staying at home in Beijing but was free to come and go as she chose.

WTA chief executive Steve Simon questioned the emailed statement's legitimacy (可信度) while others said it only increased their concern about her safety.

Peng dropped out of sight after the accusation against former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli briefly appeared on Chinese social media before being swiftly removed.
