The Tai-Ex opened down 104-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 18,396 on turnover of $5.9-billion N-T.
The Tai-Ex closed slightly lower on Wednesday after coming off an historical intra-day high as investors locked in gains from the first two sessions of the new year.
Market watchers say Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing suffered (遭受) profit-taking, while buying rotated to select old economy and financial stocks -- which lent support to the main board.
But investors still opted to move to the sell side as the Tai-Ex encountered technical resistance ahead of the 18,600 point mark.
Taoyuan Steps Up Measures Amid Spreading Airport Cluster

Taoyuan is stepping up safety measures amid confirmation of another 3 COVID-19 cases at the airport.
City mayor Cheng Wen-tsan says just over 90 possible contacts of the three airport cleaning staff have been identified, and sent into centralized (集中) quarantine
Cheng says two of the patients are Taoyuan residents while one lives in another city.
The mayor also says one of the patients had visited a local karaoke club in Zhong-li District 5 days in succession, including on New Year's Eve.
Cheng says over a thousand people attended the club's event that night, with the majority foregoing face masks.
Officials say all those who attended the event are undergoing testing.
The mayor says vaccination stations in the city will now operate under extended hours into the evening, as well as parts of weekends, and he is urging everyone to get fully vaccianted as soon as possible.

HK Gov Faces Calls for Subsidies Amid COVID19 Rules

The Hong Kong government is facing calls to offer more financial subsidies to businesses affected by tight new restrictions to combat the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
The head of Hong Kong's restaurant industry says the sector (領域，行業) faces a billion dollars of losses.

Lebanon Group Scuffles with Peacekeepers

A U.N. official says unknown perpetrators have attacked a group of U.N. peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, vandalizing (破壞) their vehicles and stealing official items from them.
The U.N. force called on Lebanese authorities to ``investigate quickly and thoroughly, and prosecute all those responsible for these crimes.''
Local media reported that residents of a southern town scuffled on Tuesday night with Irish peacekeepers who they said were taking photographs of residential homes.
The U.N. calls on all parties to respect the freedom of movement of U.N. peacekeepers which is required under the status of forces agreement between the U.N. and the government of Lebanon.
Italy Government Mandates Vaccination for 50 and Older

The Italian government is making it obligatory for people 50 or older to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Premier Mario Draghi's Cabinet met Wednesday evening and voted unanimously for the mandate (命令).
Earlier in the day, nearly 190-thousand new infections were confirmed by the Health Ministry.
The government says it is cracking down on those who refuse to be vaccinated and who now account for the majority of patients in Italy's rapidly filling-up ICU beds.
