Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened down 74-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 18,095 on turnover of $4.2-billion N-T.
Shares in Taiwan moved sharply lower to close below the 18,200 point mark Friday as the bellwether electronics sector faced further selling with investors locking in gains (收益) built earlier in the week.
Analysts say investors rushed to cut their holdings amid growing concerns over a plan by the U.S. Federal Reserve to start reducing its balance sheet.
This comes on the heels of the release of minutes that were more hawkish than expected from a Fed policymaking meeting held in December.

More Schools Closes Amid Confirmed COVID19 Case

Officials have announced more school closures amid confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Taoyuan.
A Zhong-li District middle school announced that it would suspend classes today, after a parent tested positive.
School officials say the premises will be thoroughly disinfected today.
This comes after a Zhong-li District Elementary school announced it would suspended in-person classes for 14 days, after a 10-year-old student tested positive.
The student belongs to the same family as an infected airport worker.
Overall, two Taoyuan elementary schools are halting in-person classes for 14 days, while two middle schools are closing for 1 day as a precaution (預防).

US Bronx Fire Leaves 19 Dead

At least 19 people, including nine children, have been killed in an apartment building fire in the Bronx in New York, described as one of the worst fires in the city's recent (最近的) history.
Officials said the blaze was likely caused by a malfunctioning space heater.

Russia US Officials Hold Working Dinner

Top Russian and U.S. officials have held a working dinner in Geneva as part of the kickoff to a string of meetings in three European cities this week with bilateral ties at a low ebb (衰退、落潮) over Russia's military buildup near Ukraine.
Diplomatic officials said that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and other Russian officials arrived on Sunday evening for a meeting at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament.
The less formal Sunday talks come ahead of a broader discussion between the two diplomats and their teams at the U.S. mission in Geneva starting today.
UK Preps for Platinum Jubileee

The United Kingdom will celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne with a military parade, neighborhood parties and a competition to create a new dessert for the Platinum Jubilee.
Buckingham Palace says Elizabeth will become on Feb. 6-th the first British monarch to reign for seven decades, and festivities (慶祝活動) marking the anniversary will culminate in a four-day weekend of events June 2-5.
It wasn't immediately clear which events the 95-year-old queen will take part in after doctors recently advised her to get more rest.
Some 1,400 people have already registered to host Jubilee lunches on June 5, with flagship events set to take place in London and at the Eden Project in Cornwall.
The palace expects there will be some 200,000 neighborhood events across the U.K.
