Tai-Ex opening

發佈於 2022-01-11 10:42:13

The Tai-Ex opened up 27-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 18,267 on turnover of T$4.1-billion N-T.

Shares in Taiwan recouped earlier losses and closed higher Monday after contract chipmaker TSMC staged a technical rebound amid optimism surrounding its fundamentals (基礎,基本的).

Turnover remained thin as many investors preferred to stay on the sidelines, with dealers attributing the growing wariness to hints from the U.S. Federal Reserve that it would not only kick off a rate hike cycle but also cut its balance sheet to further tighten the money supply.

And analysts say in addition to monitoring the Fed's move, investors are closely watching how the domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases related to the Taoyuan International Airport will evolve, as such concerns have also kept turnover low.

 Taiwan-Canada Talks

發佈於 2022-01-11 10:42:14

Taiwan and Canada have held exploratory talks aimed at boosting trade and bilateral ties.

A virtual meeting was held between Executive Yuan member John CC Deng, and Canada's Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, Mary Ng.

During the meeting, Taiwan expressed an interest in laying the groundwork that can eventually end in a bilateral Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Arrangement, or FIPA.

The Canadian International Trade Minister hailed Taiwan as a "key investment trading partner for Canada," while that country seeks to deepen partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

Both sides raised the need to work together to promote supply chain resilience (復元力) and mutually beneficial commercial opportunities.

In 2020, direct Canadian investment in Taiwan was valued at more than 12 billion N-T. Taiwanese direct investment in Canada for the same period stood at about 5.5 billion N-T.

South Korea and Japan say North Korea has fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile into its eastern sea.

The launch comes as North Korea continues to demonstrate (展示) its military might amid a self-imposed pandemic lockdown and deadlocked nuclear talks with the United States.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says North Korea likely fired a single ballistic missile from an inland area to its eastern sea.

It didn't immediately say how far the weapon flew.

Japan's Prime Minister's Office and Defense Ministry say the North Korean weapon was possibly a ballistic missile, but didn't immediately provide more details.
