Tai-Ex opening

發佈於 2022-01-27 10:19:14

Shares in Taiwan closed slightly lower Wednesday as buying rotated to old economy and financial stocks to offset electronics sector losses that emerged after tech stocks plunged on the U.S. markets.

Turnover remained thin as many investors stayed on the sidelines amid fears over negative leads that could emerge during the upcoming long Lunar New Year holiday, according to dealers.

The local market will be closed Jan. 27-th to Feb. 6th.

 Taiwan gets praise

發佈於 2022-01-27 10:19:14

Vice President Lai Ching-te says Taiwan received praise from U-S congressional representatives for its determination to uphold democracy.

During a stopover in Los Angeles, and on his way to Honduras, Lai met with 17 U-S lawmakers via video conference.

The vice president said Taiwan was hailed for not bowing to (向...低頭) pressure from China despite Beijing's moves to send warplanes into Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) and while it conducts disinformation campaigns.

Lai is leading a delegation to Honduras to attend the inauguration of President-elect Xiomara Castro on Jan. 27.

Tropical Storm Ana Hits Southern Africa

發佈於 2022-01-27 10:19:14

Mozambique, Madagascar and Malawi are counting the deaths and damage by tropical storm Ana and more than a week of heavy rains across southern Africa.

In central and northern Mozambique at least 11 people have died and several bridges and roads have been washed away.

Electricity has also been cut off to large parts of Mozambique and Malawi as power lines have been knocked over by flooding waters and hydro turbines have been clogged by debris (廢物) carried by the waters.

Although Ana has weakened to become a moderate tropical depression, much of the southern African region continues to get torrential rains.

Prolonged rains have increased the damage in Madagascar, where the death toll has risen to 39 and more than 101,000 people have been made homeless by the flooding.

UAE Summons Sharers of Intercepted Missile Footage

發佈於 2022-01-27 10:19:14

State prosecutors in Abu Dhabi have summoned people who shared videos on social media earlier this week of Emirati defense forces intercepting missiles fired by Yemen's Houthis at the nation's capital.

The UAE's attorney general says the distribution of footage from the attack exposes military installations and other vital sites to risk and ``may affect the security and stability of society.''

He said prosecutors would pursue deterrent legal measures against those who publish ``legally prohibited'' material.

The official did not disclose how many people were summoned, what specific law they may have violated nor what penalties they face.

Earlier this month, the UAE enacted a new cybercrime law that rights groups say is worryingly restrictive and enables the targeting of people who post information online that contravenes (違反) the official state line.
