Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened down 62-points this morning from Friday's close, at 16,345
on turnover of 4.1-billion N-T.

The market lost ground on Friday, as regional indexes ended the day mostly
down, following fears on Wall Street that U-S interest rate hikes to fight
inflation might stall (使動彈不得) economic growth.

The market cap of the local exchange fell about 1.08-per cent from last week
from a week earlier to stand at 50.94-trillion N-T.

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says the Central Epidemic Command Center is
considering downgrading the coronavirus from a category 5 notifiable
communicable disease to a category 4 disease in July.

The move comes as the government is seeking to re-open the island's borders,
or at least relax some border controls that same month.

The coronavirus was listed as a category 5 notifiable communicable disease
(傳染病) in January of 2020, which allowed the government to initiate
quarantine orders.

According to the health minister, based on outbreaks in other countries, the
current surge in local infections here in Taiwan is expected to peak at the
end of this month or early next month, meaning that daily infections will
likely decline by July.

And,

President Tsai Ing-wen is praising mothers in Taiwan, saying they were
"superheroes" in the eyes of their children.

Tsai sent the message on Mother's Day and taking to social media, Tsai said
she had learned from her own mother just how difficult a task it was to raise
children.

The president also thanked all mothers in Taiwan for their sacrifices and
commended (表彰) them for overcoming the challenges they encounter on daily
basis, which she said made them "superheroes" in the eyes of their children.

And she went on to say that the government has rolled out several initiatives
to properly support mothers in recognition of the difficulties facing modern
working families.

US First Lady Jill Biden has made an unannounced visit to western Ukraine,
where she held a surprise meeting with the first lady OlenaZelenska to show
U.S. support for the embattled nation.

Biden traveled under the cloak of secrecy, becoming the latest high-profile
American to enter Ukraine during its 10-week-old conflict with Russia.

The two first ladies came together in a small classroom, sitting across a
table from one another and greeting each other in front of reporters before
they met in private.

Zelenska and her children have been at an undisclosed (未公開) location for
their safety.

Biden's visit follows recent stops in the war-torn country by U.S. House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress, as well as a joint trip
by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd
Austin to meet with President VolodymyrZelenskyy in Kyiv.

An Islamic State affiliate in Egypt is claiming responsibility for an attack
that targeted a water pumping station east of the Suez Canal, killing at
least 11 soldiers.

Militants attacked troops at a checkpoint guarding the pumping facility, then
fled the site.

The military said troops were pursuing the attackers in an isolated area of
the northern Sinai Peninsula.

At least five other soldiers were wounded in Saturday's attack, according to
the Egyptian military.

Egypt is battling an Islamic State-led insurgency (叛亂) in the Sinai that
intensified after the military overthrew an elected but divisive Islamist
president in 2013.
