The Tai-Ex opened up 49.1-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
16,194 on turnover of $3.4-billion N-T.

Shares in Taiwan climbed out of a slump to close higher Friday, led by
contract chipmaker TSMC, which recovered from its tumble (跌) in the previous
session.

TSMC helped boost the bellwether electronics sector, and the gains also
spread to the old economy and financial sectors, lending additional support
to the main board.

But turnover remained low amid fears of further volatility on the United
States markets.

The Executive Yuan's Gender Equality Committee says support for the right of
gay couples to wed has risen to 60.9 percent, still up substantially from
four years earlier.

The survey's release coincides with the third anniversary of its legalization
of same-sex marriage on May 24

The survey found that nearly 61 percent of respondents supported the right of
same-sex couples to marry, up 0.5 percentage points from last year's survey.

It's also up 23.5 percentage points from the 37.4 percent who supported that
right in 2018.
.
The survey also showed 71 percent of respondents said same-sex married
couples should have the right to adopt (領養) children.

Nearly 72 percent agreed that same-sex couples can raise children just as
well as opposite-sex couples.

President Joe Biden says cases of monkeypox are ``something that everybody
should be concerned about.''

The president made his first public comments on the disease after being asked
about it during his visit to South Korea.

He said there's work underway to identify an effective vaccine.

And he added that if the disease were to spread ``it would be consequential
(有重要性的).''

The disease is rarely identified outside of Africa, but there have been a
number of recent cases in Europe and at least two in the United States.

Although the disease belongs to the same virus family as smallpox, its
symptoms are milder.

Most people recover from monkeypox without hospitalization, but it can be
fatal.

A fatally shooting on a New York City subway train Sunday kills a man and
police say they are searching for a suspect (犯疑).

AP correspondent Julie Walker reports.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says his country is interested in a major gas
project in Senegal.

He made the comment Sunday as he began a three-nation visit to Africa that
also is focused on the geopolitical consequences of the war in Ukraine.

The trip is Scholz's first visit to Africa since becoming chancellor nearly
six months ago.

Two of the nations he is visiting, Senegal and South Africa, have been
invited to attend (參加) next month's G-7 summit in Germany.

Scholz also will visit Niger, where hundreds of German soldiers are expected
to be relocated amid the deepening political crisis in neighboring Mali.
