Facing criticism from lawmakers and the media, MOFA says today it did put in
a lot of efforts in gaining membership of the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic
Framework for Prosperity (印太經濟架構).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says before US President Joe Biden launched
the pact with a dozen partners on Monday in Tokyo, Taiwan had made it very
clear to the U.S. about our strong intentions to be included.

MOFA says its officials contacted the US Trade Representative Office, the
Department of Commerce and the White House National Security Council to
express the importance of Taiwan's participation in the IPEF.

MOFA says the US side had also stressed the open, flexible and inclusive
(彈性和包容) nature of this new framework, but it didn't make any promise to
Taiwan.

The statement comes after Deputy Foreign Minister Tian Zhong-guang told
lawmakers that he didn't know that Taiwan was not included in the IPEF's
initial partners until he read the newspaper.

Several DPP lawmakers have criticized MOFA, saying that it should express
"deep regrets" to the US and keep pushing for Taiwan's inclusion (加入).

A plan by Samsung Group to invest $356 billion US dollars in core
technologies such as semiconductors is unlikely to displace (取代) Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Company as the world's largest contract
chipmaker.

An industry observer says that while the huge investment may drive the growth
of Samsung's semiconductor business in the future, the South Korean
conglomerate still lags behind TSMC in terms of manufacturing technology and
customer relations.

She said thatTSMC remains dominant (稱霸) in areas such as manufacturing
technology and yields (產量), and it continues to outpace (超越) its major
competitors Samsung and U.S.-based Intel in terms of advanced semiconductor
technology development.

The Taiwanese company has already secured orders for its 3 nanometer chips
and is scheduled to start mass production later this year.

She adds that Samsung is still struggling with 3nm manufacturing issues that
could impact (影響) its ability to mass-produce chips and devices on that
process.

Taiwan shares opened up 24 points at 16,128 after stocks rose broadly on Wall
Street overnight.

The turnover was $2.55 billion NT.

In world news

North Korean state-run media made no mention today of the country's recent
missile launches, despite its custom of reporting them to the public.

Its silence comes amid growing fears that the country may carry out (進行) a
nuclear test in the near future.

Phoebe Amoroso reports.

A single vessel carrying 842 Haitians who apparently were trying to reach the
United States has landed instead in central Cuba.

It appears to be the largest group yet in a swelling exodus (暴增的出走潮) of
people from crisis-stricken (處處危機的) Haiti.

The U.S. Coast Guard and other nations have reported intercepting (攔截)
boats carrying well over 100 Haitians in recent months.

Red Cross officials in the Cuban province of Villa Clara said Wednesday that
the over 800 Haitians have been given medical attention and are being housed
at a tourist campground.

The group arrived Tuesday at Villa Blanca, about 180 miles east of Havana.
