The Tai-Ex opened down 39.5-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
16,582 on turnover of $2.6-billion N-T.

The market lost ground on Thursday, as investors were watching for fresh
signs of inflation following a broad decline on Wall Street overnight, while
crude oil prices hovered above 122 U-S dollars a barrel, adding to price
pressures.

Turnover for the session stood at 194-billion N-T - and that marked the
fourth time so far this year that it has fallen to below the 200-billion N-T
mark.

The Central Epidemic Command Center says the government is considering
allowing travel agencies to organize group tours to other countries beginning
September.

The statement comes as Japan is set to start allowing tourists on package
tours from some countries to enter from June 10.

Those countries include Taiwan.

However, the government has yet to finalize (敲定) plans to relax border
restrictions and revise quarantine mandates for arrivals, which will affect
Taiwanese nationals who chose to travel overseas for tourism purposes on
their return to Taiwan

The government has said that eased border regulations and quarantine measures
will be announced sometime this month, but will likely only apply to business
travelers in the initial stage.

The House approves a 'red flag' gun bill that's unlikely to pass in the
Senate.

AP correspondent Mike Gracia reports.

U.N. member nations have elected five countries to join the U.N. Security
Council-- Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland.

Winning a seat on the 15-member Security Council gives countries a strong
voice on issues of international peace and security.

It will be Mozambique and Switzerland's first time serving on the council,
Japan's 12th time, Ecuador's third and Malta's second.

The five new council members will start their terms on Jan. 1, replacing
(取代) five countries whose two-year terms end on Dec. 31 -- India, Ireland,
Kenya, Mexico and Norway.

The government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has authorized Russian
troops, planes and ships to deploy to Nicaragua for purposes of training, law
enforcement or emergency response.

In a decree published this week, and confirmed by Russia on Thursday, Ortega
will allow Russian troops to carry out law enforcement duties, ``humanitarian
aid, rescue and search missions in emergencies or natural disasters.''

The Nicaraguan government also authorized the presence (出席,在場) of small
contingents of Russian troops for ``exchange of experiences and training.''

A spokeswoman for Russia's foreign ministry notes the law also authorizes
troops from the United States, Mexico and other Central American countries
for such purposes.
