Taiwan reveals genome sequencing of nation's first monkeypox case

發佈於 2022-07-08 10:26:13

Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control has released the genome sequencing results of the nation's first case of monkeypox, revealing that the patient contracted the less fatal B.1 variant of the virus.

The CDC says the B.1 strain is not the strain from central Africa, which has a fatality rate (死亡率) of 10 percent, but rather the one recently found in monkeypox outbreaks in Europe and the United States, which originally came from west Africa.

CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang adds that the CDC has shared the results of the genome sequencing with science initiative GISAID, which provides open access to genomic data on influenza viruses globally and the coronavirus causing COVID-19.

Chuang said sharing the data will contribute to international medical studies and research.

The Cabinet says it's closely monitoring the cost of goods - but is insisting Taiwan's economic fundamentals ( 基礎) remain strong.

The statement comes a day after the government reported that inflation had hit a 14-year high.

Cabinet spokesman Luo Bing-cheng says the rise in consumer prices was largely being driven by global factors, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

But as Luo says, the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy remain strong -- citing stable growth in exports and private consumption, as well as total investment projected to reach 26.82-per cent of G-D-P for this year.
