The Tai-Ex opened down 36-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 14741 on turnover of $1.9-billion N-T.

The market staged a mild technical rebound on Wednesday after heavy losses the previous day, but turnover remained thin amid investor concerns about increased cross-strait tensions due to the visit to Taipei by U-S House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The bellwether electronics sector led the rebound as the National Stabilization Fund reportedly entered the market to support the local main board, while selling also focused on old economy stocks throughout the session.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs says Taiwan has has sufficient energy reserves and it's stocks "exceed regulatory safety levels."

The statement comes amid concerns about energy supplies as China holds live-fire military in waters surrounding Taiwan from today to Sunday.

According to the ministry, the government has numerous contingency plans (應變計劃) in place in regards energy reserves for domestic use to counter any actions that Chinese military may choose to take during the exercises.

The ministry says figures show that Taiwan has 146-days of crude oil reserves, natural gas reserves equivalent to 10 to 11 days and Taiwan's stockpiles of coal are sufficient to last for 39 days.

Officials say the economics ministry is continuing to monitor energy stocks jointly with Tai-Power and C-P-C.


 Mexico Miners Trapped in Northern Mexico

Mexico's president says nine miners have been trapped by a cave-in at a coal mine in northern Mexico.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador tweeted that the accident happened Wednesday afternoon in the border state of Coahuila.

The president says 92 soldiers, specialists (專家) and four dogs are the scene assisting rescue efforts.

The Coahuila state government says the collapse occurred after the miners breached a neighboring area filled with water.

Local media outlets report that a miner managed to escape the collapse and alerted authorities.

 WHO COVID19 Case Numbers and Deaths Stable

The World Health Organization says new coronavirus cases fell 9% globally last week while deaths remained stable.

TThat's according to the WHO's latest weekly assessment of the pandemic, which was released Wednesday.

The U.N. health agency said there were 6.5 million cases reported last week with more than 14-thousand deaths.

WHO has previously warned that recent surveillance of COVID-19 has been compromised by countries reducing their testing and reporting.

The agency says COVID-19 figures are likely being significantly underestimated, which could make it more difficult to spot any worrisome new variants.

New cases fell 35% in Europe but increased about 20% in the Western Pacific and 5% in Africa.
