Earthquake off of Hualian

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake rattled eastern city of Hualian at 6:04 AM today.
the Central Weather Administration says the quake had a depth of 21.6 kilometers, with the epicenter (震央) located 22 kilometers south of Hualien County Government offshore (外海).
The highest intensity (震度) recorded was Level 3 in Hualien County, while it was level 1 in the Taroko area and level 1 in Taidong.
Anti-Surrogacy Protester Bemoan Bill

Women's groups are protesting proposed draft amendments to the Assisted Reproduction Act (人工生殖法).
The amendments are currently under discussion in the Legislative Yuan and - if passed - could lead to the legalization of surrogacy (代理孕母) here in Taiwan.
Sixteen amendments are being discussed and the proposals have been put forward by the D-P-P, the K-M-T and the Taiwan People's Party and are aimed at broadening access to artificial insemination for single women, same-sex couples and surrogate mothers.
Anti-surrogacy activists are calling for an immediate halt (暫停) to the review of the bill - arguing that studies continue to indicate that surrogacy carries higher physical and mental health risks than non-surrogacy.
.. and that the proposed amendments lacks comprehensive consideration and ignore potential irreversible (難以回復的) damage to the health of surrogates.
The issue of surrogacy arose earlier this year after the Ministry of Health announced its own batch of draft amendments to the Assisted Reproduction Act in May.
However, the ministry withdrew a "surrogate mother system" from its proposed changes earlier this week after eight D-P-P lawmakers held a press conference criticizing the ministry's plan.

South Korea’s ruling party chief says it’s necessary to suspend the constitutional powers of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The comments by People Power Party leader Han Dong-hun today suggest that his party would change its earlier opposition to the impeachment (彈劾) of Yoon over his imposition of martial law earlier this week.
The main opposition Democratic Party and other small opposition parties submitted a joint motion (聯合動議) to impeach Yoon on Wednesday over his martial law declaration the previous night.
Martial law lasted about six hours, as the National Assembly quickly voted to overrule (否決) the president, forcing his Cabinet to lift it before daybreak Wednesday.
The main liberal opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung said in a separate televised speech that it was crucial to suspend Yoon as “quickly as possible."
Tsunami warning called off in California

US officials have called off a tsunami warning, that was issued in the wake of a strong earthquake off the coast of Northern California.
Millions of people had been instructed to evacuate coastal areas and head to higher ground.

NASA-Moon Missions delayed

NASA has announced more delays in sending astronauts back to the moon more than 50 years after Apollo.
Administrator Bill Nelson said Thursday that the next mission in the Artemis program is now targeted for April 2026.
The lunar fly-around with four astronauts had been planned for September 2025.
Officials said the investigation into heat shield damage from the capsule’s initial test flight two years ago took time and other spacecraft improvements are still needed.
This means a moon landing by two other astronauts is off until at least 2027.
Astronauts last walked on the moon in December 1972 during Apollo 17.
