900 to participate in military-free Tainan civil defense drill
發布於 2025-03-25 17:15:14
Some 900 civilians will reportedly practice using military field hospital equipment (軍方的野戰醫院) without the assistance of armed forces personnel during a civil defense drill in Tainan this Thursday.

An official says although the drill is to be staged in Tainan, fire departments from Kaohsiung and Chiayi and alternative service conscripts (替代役男) will also participate in the drill.

The drill is taking place this week after Presidential Office spokeswoman Karen Kuo last week announced that the small-scale exercise would simulate (模擬) a severe "compound disasters" scenario (特別複雜的情境) involving earthquakes, tsunamis and critical infrastructure disruptions.

According to the spokeswoman, the drills will test central and local governments' emergency response capabilities, such as large-scale evacuations, sheltering (遮蔽), and establishing emergency medical facilities.

發布於 2025-03-25 17:15:14
The Tainan City Government has unveiled its plans for construction of the city's first metro line.

According to the city's transportation bureau, the National Development Council has reviewed the phase one plan and it will be revised (修改) before being submitted to the Cabinet for final approval.

The bureau says it's currently hoped that construction can begin late next year at the earliest.

Under the proposal for phase one of the "Blue Line," it will run along Zhonghua Road in the city's Yongkang District, Zhonghua East and Dongmen roads in the East District, and along Zhongshan Road in the Rende District.

The 8.39-kilometer line will be elevated (高架) and have 10 stations.

U.S. airstrikes targeting Yemen’s Houthi rebels

In world news...

U.S. airstrikes targeting Yemen’s Houthi rebels have pounded sites across the country.

The rebels say one attack Sunday in the capital killed at least two people and wounded more than a dozen others.

The American strikes on the rebel group, which threatens maritime trade (海上貿易) and Israel, entered their 10th day without any sign of stopping.

They are part of a campaign by U.S. President Donald Trump targeting the rebels while also trying to pressure Iran, the Houthis’ main benefactor (施主).

Trump’s national security adviser Mike Waltz claimed the attacks have “taken out key Houthi leadership, including their head missileer (飛彈手).”

Turkey protests saw journalists arrested
發布於 2025-03-25 17:15:14
A media workers' union says Turkish authorities have arrested several journalists at their homes.

That's while protests escalate after the jailing of a top rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was jailed Sunday pending a trial on corruption charges.

His detention last week sparked the largest wave of street demonstrations in Turkey in more than a decade.

The Disk-Basin-Is union says at least eight reporters and photojournalists were detained in what it said was an “attack on press freedoms and the people’s right to learn the truth.”

meanwhile Government officials said a total of 1,133 people have been detained since the mayor was arrested at his home, and as many as 123 police officers were injured in the protests.

Materials such as acid, firebombs and knives were seized.

South-Korea-Martial-Law
發布於 2025-03-25 17:15:14
The latest twist in South Korea's political crisis (危機) came Monday with the reinstatement of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo after the Constitutional Court overturned his impeachment in a 7-1 ruling.

The court is still weighing the far more consequential case of President Yoon Suk Yeol over his brief imposition of martial law late last year.

The prime minister typically holds limited authority as the country’s second-highest official.

But Han, a career bureaucrat (有經驗的官員), was elevated as the government’s caretaker after South Korea’s opposition-controlled National Assembly impeached Yoon on Dec. 14.

His case did not directly involve Yoon's decision to impose martial law, so it is unlikely to signal how the court will rule on Yoon.

But the ruling has struck a nerve with the opposition while the court engages in lengthy deliberations (冗長的考量) over Yoon's case.
