 Report Finds Taroko Express Crash Occurred After Removal of Project

An investigation report into April's Taroko Express crash has found that the accident occured less than 20 days after the Taiwan Railways Administration approved a contractor's request to cancel 24-hour manual supervision of a slope (坡) stabilization work project.

The report has been compiled by the Transportation Safety Board.

And it says the railways administration agreed to cancel 24-hour supervision of the project site near the Qing-Shui Tunnel in Hualien on March 15, after the contractor said it had removed steel molds from the construction site.

According to the report, the contractor made the request to cancel the supervision on February 24.

Forty-nine people were killed when the train derailed and more than 200 others were injured.


 Palau Travel Bubble Unaffected

The travel bubble between Taiwan and Palau reportedly remains unaffected despite the Pacific island nation introducing new restrictions on foreign arrivals.

The new restrictions were introduced after Palau reported its first-ever coronavirus cases and all foreign arrivals now need to show proof of being fully vaccinated against the coronavirus

The head of the Taiwan office of Palau's tourism bureau is being quoted as saying the new rules do not apply to those arriving in the country as part of the Taiwan-Palau travel bubble.

But people traveling to Palau via the bubble will now need to get a P-C-R test on arrival (到達).


 US Imposes Sanctions Over Tigray Conflict

The United States has imposed new sanctions over Ethiopia's deadly Tigray conflict.

The Treasury Department says the chief of staff of the defense forces of neighboring Eritrea is sanctioned for leading an entity accused of ``despicable acts'' including massacres (屠殺、殺戮), widespread sexual assault and the executions of boys.

The nine-month war has killed thousands of people as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, teamed up with former enemy Eritrea to wage war on the Tigray forces.

The U.S. calls on Eritrea to remove its soldiers from Tigray permanently.

 Mexico Gulf Fire Leaves Dead and Missing

Mexico's state-owned oil company says five workers were killed, two workers are missing and six were injured in a massive fire at one of its oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company says the the fire at the processing platform in the Ku-Maloob-Zaap field had been brought under control.

The company said Monday that the fire caused the shutdown of 125 wells in the field, which will reduce Mexico's daily output (產量) of oil equivalents by 421-thousand barrels per day.
