Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 32-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,210 on turnover of $3.2-billion N-T.
The market tumbled nearly 2-per cent Thursday, as investors reacted to a continued rise in domestic coronavirus cases and heavy losses on Wall Street overnight after the U-S Federal Reserve hinted at (暗示) faster and bigger
interest rate hikes.
The weighted index ended the day down 343-points at 17,178 -- marking its lowest closing since March 18.
All major sectors lost ground, including financial stocks, which slumped 1.44-per cent, after helping to anchor the main board over the past few sessions.
CECC Planning to Purchase More Paxlovid Coronavirus Drug

Health minister Chen Shih-chung says the government is planning to purchase more batches of the Paxlovid antiviral coronavirus drug Pfizer.
According to Chen, although it's currently hard to get hold of, the government's plan is to procure (取得) at least 100-thousand more courses of this antiviral drug.
The government signed a deal with Pfizer to procure 20-thousand courses of Paxlovid earlier this year.
The first batch containing 3-thousand-200 courses arrived in Taiwan on January 27, while the roughly 15-thousand remaining courses of Paxlovid have yet to be delivered.
Xue-shan Tunnel closed due to accident

An accident inside Xue-shan Tunnel on Taipei-Yilan Freeway at 8:34 AM has led to the closure of the section between Tou-cheng and Ping-lin.
The Highway Police Bureau says a sedan caught fire when passing through the tunnel, prompting (促進、造成) firemen to temporarily close both directions of the tunnel.
Police say firemen have put out the fire and are now cleaning up.
They say traffic should soon be restored to the number 5 freeway.

Israel Shooting Leaves 2 Dead

Israeli medics say at least two people were killed and several were wounded in a shooting in central Tel Aviv.
The Thursday night attack occurred in a busy area with many bars and restaurants packed (滿) with people.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, but it came amid heightened tensions following a series of deadly attacks carried out by Palestinians.
Police flooded the area and urged people to stay away.
They say there were ``indications'' it was a politically motivated attack.
The attacker was still at large hours later.

Puerto Rico Power Outage Continues

More than a million customers in Puerto Rico remain without electricity after a fire at a main power plant caused an island-wide blackout.
Wednesday night's outage also left more than 180,000 customers without water.
It also forced the U.S. territory to cancel classes and shutter (關閉) government offices, in the biggest outage yet this year.
A private company that took over transmission and distribution from Puerto Rico's Electric Power Authority last year said the blackout could have been caused by a circuit breaker failure at the Costa Sur generation plant.
