Labor Insurance Fund has good short-term prospects

The Ministry of Labor says a report has found that the Labor Insurance Fund (勞保基金) has good short-term prospects due to recent premium and investment gains (保費收入以及投資獲利), but the future of the program remains challenging.
The Labor Insurance Fund is a key source of funding for Taiwan's main basic pension program and report on the fund is released every three years.
According to labor ministry's Department of Labor Insurance, the latest report estimates that the 1.1-trillion N-T it had as of the end of November 2024 will dry up in 2031.
That's three years later than projected in the previous report three years ago, but labor insurance department officials are warning that hidden liabilities are continuing to surge.
Flu-like cases hit ten year high

The Centers for Disease Control says hospital visits by people with flu-like illnesses hit a new ten-year high last week.
According to the C-D-C, data shows that there were 141,777 hospital visits for flu-like illnesses between January 12 and 18.
Health officials say that figure is expected to increase in the coming weeks - as people travel during the Lunar New Year holiday period.
The C-D-C says Taiwan is not the only country seeing a rise in the number of flu cases - as cases are also climbing in China, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea.
570 kg of spice powder rejected at border for pesticide residue

The Food and Drug Administration says shipments totaling 570-kilograms of spice powder have recently been intercepted (攔截) at the border for excessive pesticide residues (農藥殘留過量).
According to the F-D-A, of the five shipments of spices, four were from the United Arab Emirates and one from Malaysia.
All were found to contain multiple pesticides in excess of the legal limits permitted by Taiwan.
All five rejected shipments were imported by Vijaya International - the operator of Indian food chain Mayur Indian Kitchen.
The F-D-A says Vijaya International is now subject to 100-per cent inspections of its imports.

US President Donald Trump has announced billions of dollars in private sector investment to construct artificial intelligence infrastructure (基礎建設) in the United States.
It follows him signing an executive order on Monday overturning (推翻) policies which were aimed at monitoring and regulating (規範) AI risks.

Late last month, a specialized camera was lowered into an almost 2,600-meter deep mineshaft (礦井) in South Africa where hundreds of miners were reported to be trapped and starving (受困並且挨餓).
Rescuers got their first visuals (第一次看到畫面) when the camera reached 1,280 meters underground: A large group of miners standing, waiting for help to arrive.
The camera was next lowered with a notepad, and the miners replied that 480 of them were underground and those still alive were desperate to leave.
That set off discussions about how to bring the miners to the surface.
The miners had been working illegally in an abandoned gold mine, and authorities have faced growing anger over their initial refusal to help (最初拒絕幫忙) and cutting off their food.
At least 87 miners have already died.
