Lawmakers passes bill extending potential lifespan of nuclear plants

Lawmakers have passed an amendment to the Nuclear Reactor Facilities
Regulation Act (核子反應器設施管制法) that will allow nuclear power plant
operators to apply for a 20-year license renewal (換發執照) beyond the
existing 40-year limit.

The move potentially extends a plant's operating lifespan to 60 years.

If granted, the renewed operating licenses would be valid for up to 20 years
from the date they take effect, with the Nuclear Safety Commission setting
the application procedures, required documentation (需要的文件) and safety
review standards.

Taiwan will cease to generate any nuclear power when the No. 2 reactor at the
Nuclear Power Plant in Pingtung County goes offline this coming Saturday.

Child welfare foundation apologizes after infant death sentencing

The Child Welfare League Foundation has issued a public apology and is
calling for urgent systematic reforms after the Taipei District Court found
two sisters guilty of torturing a one-year-old boy in their care to death.

The court sentenced Liu Cai-xuan to life in prison and her sister, Liu
Ruo-lin, to 18 years in prison for charges including abuse resulting in the
child's death.

That had been hired by the Child Welfare League Foundation to care for the
boy in August 2023.

The foundation has admitted its failure in preventing the tragedy, is
pledging a full internal review (允諾會行內部檢討), and emphasizing that it
will take legal responsibility if found liable (負起責任) in any future
proceedings (法律過程).

Israel won't halt war in Gaza

In world news...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says there is “no way” Israel
will halt (停止) its war in Gaza, even if a deal is reached to release more
hostages.

Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Israeli forces are just days away from a
promised escalation of force (加強武力) and would enter Gaza “with great
strength to complete the mission," which he said meant defeating Hamas.

Also on Tuesday, the Israeli military struck what it said was a Hamas
“command and control center” located beneath a hospital in southern Gaza.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said six people were killed and 40 were wounded in
the strike.

Trump Mideast trip overshadowed by Qatar plane

U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East trip is underway as he looks to
reel in trillions of dollars of investments.

However, his acceptance of the $400m U.S. dollar luxury plane from Qatar is
raising ethical (道德倫理的) and constitutional questions and provoking
(激起) criticism.

Nick Harper reports from Washington.

Cannes Film Festival Opening Day

Much of the cinema world, including Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and
Quentin Tarantino, descended on the Cannes Film Festival as the French
Riviera extravaganza got underway Tuesday.

In the opening ceremony, DiCaprio presented De Niro with an honorary Palme
d’Or (棕櫚獎).

In his speech, De Niro spoke out against U.S. President Donald Trump, calling
him “America's philistine (沒文化的) president” and spoke forcefully
against Trump's plans to enact tariffs on films produced internationally.

Also in attendance: Sean Baker, the “Anora” director and last year’s Palme
d’Or winner.

Tarantino officially declared the festival open and then dropped the mic.
