The Tai-Ex opened up 49-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 46,177
on turnover of 10-billion N-T.
Shares in Taiwan ended lower Monday despite a late rally as bargain hunting
emerged ahead of an increase in the local market's weighting under the latest
MSCI regular index review.
The market came under pressure initially after U.S. stocks fell Friday,
following hawkish remarks by Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, and the
early downturn also reflected a spike in crude oil prices following renewed
military strikes in the Middle East.
Taiwan Day to showcase Taiwanese culture in Poland
The National Cultural Association of Taiwan is holding a two-day "Taiwan Day"
cultural event in Poland later this month...
featuring Taiwanese contemporary dance and folk arts (民間藝術), plus a market
showcasing Taiwanese food and culture.
A social media post said that performances at the event will "transform the
Polish streets into a Taiwan temple front."
The event on September 11th and 12th will see stalls showcasing Taiwanese
foods and goods, including dumplings, which are described as the Taiwanese
counterpart to Polish pierogi.
At a promotional press event in Taipei, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, who
also serves as NCAT vice president, said the cultural tour is aimed at
inspiring Europeans to visit Taiwan and experience the country.
TRUMP HINTS AT FURTHER MILITARY ACTION AGAINST IRAN DESPITE SHIFT TO
SANCTIONS STRATEGY
US President Donald Trump has warned that the door remains open to further
military strikes on Iran, delivering a blunt assessment of Tehran's weakened
state while speaking to reporters at the White House.
The comments came as the Washington Post reported that Iran's economy is
feeling new pain from the latest sanctions campaign, though analysts doubt
the measures will bring Tehran to the negotiating table.
Iran has rejected (拒絕) the sanctions, with its economy minister saying the
new measures will fail.
Mitch Mccann in New York says a social media post by US President Donald
Trump showing an AI-generated image of bombs hitting Iran's main oil export
facility has raised concerns about what the White House may be planning.
Congo Ebola Tops 6Thousand Cases
Congo’s authorities report that the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history
has topped 6,000 cases with 2,911 deaths.
More than 1,360 people have recovered from the virus which authorities on
Monday called an “encouraging” development.
The outbreak in eastern Congo is spreading under extremely (極為) difficult
conditions.
Insecurity, displacement, a health workers’ strike and intense population
movements fuel the crisis.
The virus spread into two new health zones in the region last week.
The World Health Organization says it remains out of control and is on track
to surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak which is the deadliest on
record.
Indonesia Mt Sinabung Erupts
Mount Sinabung in Indonesia has erupted, spewing black ash and smoke into the
sky over Sumatra island.
Gray ash covered several villages after Monday's eruption, and authorities
distributed (分發) masks to residents to protect themselves.
People were advised to refrain from activities in nearby villages in Karo
district in North Sumatra province and areas within 6 kilometers of the
summit.
No casualties, evacuations or disruptions to flights were reported. I
ndonesia’s Geological Agency raised the alert to the second-highest level for
volcanic activity and expanded the safe zone around the mountain.
Sinabung has had increased volcanic activity recently, and the agency's chief
said a larger eruption (噴發) could occur.
