Taiwan Furlough Numbers Keep Rising

發佈於 2021-06-24 13:50:04

The number of furloughed workers in Taiwan continues to rise.

According to the Ministry of Labor, there are now 10,229 employees nationwide on unpaid leave programs (無薪休假計畫).

That's up 3,846 compared to the previous week.

Almost all of the new furloughs came from the hospitality, food and beverage, and wholesale and retail sectors.

The Ministry says this is in connection to decreased travel and spending, because of the ongoing nationwide level 3 coronavirus alert.

It adds that most of the new furloughs are for 13 to 16 days per month, a vast increase over the previous 1 to 4 days.

Religious events remain suspended, and controls on funeral services continue, as Taiwan continues its level 3 alert.

The Ministry of the Interior says, as the alert is extended until July 12th, places of worship (宗教場所) will remain closed to the public, and religious events for large groups will remain on hold as well.

And funeral and memorial services remain limited to family members, and those attending must adhere to safety protocols.

In addition, the ministry also reminds the public that national scenic areas, including Yangmingshan National Park, and all the beaches of Kenting, remain closed.

They are asking everyone to refrain from going out more than absolutely necessary.

Philippine Democracy Scion, Ex-Leader Benigno Aquino Dies

發佈於 2021-06-24 13:50:04

Former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has died.

He was the son of pro-democracy icons, who helped topple dictator Ferdinand Marcos, and had troublesome ties with China.

He was 61.

Aquino was president from 2010 to 2016 and the heir to a political legacy of a family that has been regarded as a shield against authoritarianism (威權主義) in the Philippines.

His father was killed in 1983 while under military custody and his mother led the 1986 "people power" revolt that ousted Marcos.

Public expectations and approval of Aquino's presidency were high, but the rise of his successor, the brash Rodrigo Duterte, was a reality check on the perceived failures during the reformist Aquino's watch.

U.S. Continues To Roll Out Localized Programs

發佈於 2021-06-24 13:50:04

U.S. President Joe Biden will be in the state of North Carolina on Thursday, continuing his mission to urge more Americans to get vaccinated.

The White House is rolling out more and more localized programs to encourage specific communities to roll up their sleeves.

Seven weeks ago, Biden laid out a goal (目標) to vaccinate 70% of all American adults by July 4th.

The White House now acknowledges it will fall a little short of that target.

Biden Administration officials attribute their miscalculation (誤算) to several factors.

The factors include the lessened sense of urgency that followed early success in the vaccination campaign, as well as a decision to reach higher than a play-it-safe lower goal.

They also encountered unexpectedly strong resistance to getting a shot, among some Americans.

John McAfee, Software Pioneer Turned Fugitive, Dead At 75

發佈於 2021-06-24 13:50:04

John McAfee, creator of McAfee antivirus software (邁克菲防毒軟體), has been found dead in his jail cell near Barcelona, in an apparent suicide.

He was found just hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the United States, to face tax charges punishable by decades in prison.

Security personnel at the penitentiary in northeastern Spain tried to revive McAfee, who was 75.

But the regional Catalan government says the jail's medical team finally certified his death.

A government statement says authorities are still investigating, but they say that everything points to death by suicide.
