發佈於 2021-07-09 14:20:04

MOFA says armed assailants (持著武器的襲擊者) have been arrested at Taiwan's Embassy in Haiti.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a security guard at the embassy discovered early yesterday morning that 11 fully-armed gunmen entered the embassy courtyard.

The compound had been shutdown since the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise on July 7th, with embassy staff working from home.

The suspects were arrested by local police later that afternoon, and are being questioned.

Officials report no damage other than a few broken windows.

Expanded Aid for Selfemployed Workers Open

發佈於 2021-07-09 14:20:04

More people who are self-employed or without a designated employer can now apply for the government's financial aid program (經濟資助系統).

The Ministry of Labor says applications open today, and end on August 9th.

During that time, those with a taxable income of less than $408-thousand NT last year, who also hold citizenship or an APRC, can register to receive funds.

And the ministry says those who fit these criteria, and have applied for government aid in 2020, do not need to apply again, and will see their financial aid directly deposited into their registered bank account, starting today.

The MOL announced days earlier that eligibility for aid was expanded, and will cover an additional 63-thousand people.

Tour Operators Offering Refunds Up To July 26th

發佈於 2021-07-09 14:20:04

Many tour operators (導遊公司) are still offering refunds to customers who made bookings up to July 26th.

This is despite a slight relaxation of level 3 restrictions, which permits tour groups of under 10 people.

Lion Travel, ezTravel, KK Day, and Klook are among the companies which have issued statements, saying they will still offer full refunds without charging processing fees.

Many are also allowing customers to change the date of their booked tours, if desired.

KK Day said ensuring customer safety during the epidemic is the company's top priority.

'Overdue': Biden Sets August 31st For U.S. Exit From Afghanistan

發佈於 2021-07-09 14:20:04

U.S. President Joe Biden says his country's military operation (軍事行動) in Afghanistan will end on August 31st.

He delivered an impassioned argument for exiting the nearly 20-year war without sacrificing more American lives, even as he says there will be no "mission accomplished" moment to celebrate.

Biden pushed back against the notion the U.S. mission has failed, but also noted that it remains unlikely the government would control all of Afghanistan after the U.S. leaves.

He urged the Afghan government and Taliban, which he said remains as formidable as it was before the war, to come to a peace agreement (和平協議).

Australia To Tighten Restrictions In Sydney

發佈於 2021-07-09 14:20:04

Australian authorities are further tightening restrictions (收緊限制) in Sydney after reporting 44 new community cases, the largest number since a coronavirus outbreak began there last month.

The city of more than 5 million is already in lockdown.

New South Wales' State Premier says new restrictions would limit the number of people who can exercise together to two in most cases, and exercisers would need to stay close to home.

The number of mourners at funerals would also be limited to 10, from Sunday.

The State Premier says that unless numbers started to come down, authorities would likely extend the lockdown beyond next Friday.

South Korea To Enforce Social Distancing In Capital

發佈於 2021-07-09 14:20:04

South Korea will enforce its strongest social distancing restrictions (社交距離限制) in the greater capital area starting next week.

That's as Seoul fights its worst wave of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

The plans, which may bring Seoul's thriving nightlife to a standstill, were announced shortly before the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported another new 1,316 cases on Wednesday.

That breaks the country's previous one-day record, set the day before.

Nearly 1,000 of the cases came from Seoul and nearby metropolitan regions, where officials will elevate social distancing restrictions to an unprecedented "Level 4", starting on Monday.
