Number of Furloughed Workers Hits New High

發佈於 2021-07-16 13:28:04

The number of furloughed workers in Taiwan has hit a new high.

31,980 people are currently on unpaid leave according to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Labor.

And 1,883 companies have furloughed workers.

That's an increase of over 10,000 workers and 821 companies from the previous week.

The hospitality and food and beverage industries are still being hit the hardest. 744 companies within these industries are implementing (實施) furlough measures.

Ministery officials say this is due to restrictions on indoor dining and people travelling less frequently under the level 3 coronavirus alert.

However, they say many workers were previously asked to take between 13 and 16 days leave per month, and this has now reduced to between 9 and 12 days, which shows work hours for affected employees are gradually increasing.

The Taiwanese International Student Movement says, foreigners can only register for vaccines if they have long-term residency visas or health insurance cards, which many foreign students do not possess.

The group says this means that many foreign students cannot currently register for vaccinations, and it is calling on the government to provide more options.

Central Epidemic Command Center Spokesperson Zhuang Ren-xiang says relevant (相關的) ministries will be asked to investigate the number of people in this situation, and they will discuss how best to proceed.
