Premier: EUA Process Will Be More Transparent

發佈於 2021-07-21 13:43:03

Premier Su Tseng-chang says the approval process for an EUA will be more transparent in the future.

Su made the statement earlier today, as some have questioned how local pharmaceutical company Medigen Vaccine Biologics was able to get Emergency Use Authorization (緊急使用授權), for its COVID-19 vaccine candidate in such a short amount of time.

Su says that authorization came after careful consideration and investigation from academics, experts, and relevant committees.

The premier says in the future, records of the EUA evaluation process will be open for public view, and he says the strictest safety standards were followed.

Produce prices (農產品價錢) are seeing an increae, as Typhoon In-fa approaches.

The Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market in Taipei says produce averaged 40 NT per kilo today, up from 39.3 NT per kilo yesterday.

Officials say about 1,272 metric tons were sold.

The Agriculture and Food Agency says produce prices often rise ahead of rough weather, with vendors preparing more stock and customers buying more to last for a few days.

The agency says prices should stabilize once In-fa passes.

Teen With U.S. Ties Again On The Run From China With Fiancee

發佈於 2021-07-21 13:43:04

A teenager who says he's a U.S. permanent resident, and his fiancee, are once again on the run from the threat of extradition (引渡) to their homeland, China.

It's a sign of Beijing's lengthening reach over perceived dissidents abroad.

Student Wang Jingyu and his fiancee Wu Huan fled their hiding place in Ukraine for the Netherlands after a warning that Chinese officials knew where they were.

Wang is wanted by China for posting criticism online and said Chinese authorities took away his green card.

The case feeds into growing fears of extraterritorial reach on China's part, especially with concerns that Hong Kong's national security law could apply to people of any nationality even outside Hong Kong.

Flooding In Central China Turns Streets To Rivers, Kills 12

發佈於 2021-07-21 13:43:04

At least 12 people died in severe flooding in a Chinese provincial capital that trapped people in subways and schools and washed away vehicles.

The city of Zhejiang had 8 inches of rain fall in one hour yesterday afternoon, in a torrent of rain (暴風雨) that turned streets into rivers, and flooded subways stations and cars.

Videos posted online showed entire neighborhoods covered in waist-deep water.

Just to the north, the famed Shaolin Temple, known for its Buddhist monks' mastery of martial arts, was also badly hit.

China's official Xinhua News Agency said 12 people had died, and 100,000 people had been moved to safer places.

U.S. Life Expectancy In 2020 Saw Biggest Drop Since WWII

發佈於 2021-07-21 13:43:04

U.S. life expectancy (預期壽命) fell by a year and a half in 2020, the largest one-year decline since World War II.

The decrease for both Black Americans and Hispanic Americans was even worse: three years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the calculations for 2020 early Wednesday.

The drop is due mainly to the COVID-19 pandemic, which health officials say is responsible for close to 74% of the overall life expectancy decline.

Killers other than COVID-19 played a role, too, as drug overdoses pushed life expectancy down, and rising homicides were a small but significant reason for the decline for Black Americans.
