The Tai-Ex opened down 655-points this morning from Friday's close, at 20,983
on turnover of $17.5-billion N-T.
The market registered is steepest point fall in history last Friday, as steep (急劇的) declines in heavyweight electronics shares reflected concerns over the the U-S economy and uninspiring earnings reports.
The weighted index tumbled 1,004-points on Friday to close 21,638.
The plunge came after Wall Street fell overnight following more signals that U-S economic growth is slowing.
MOI Says Data Show April 3 Earthquake Caused Islandwide Displacement

The Ministry of the Interior says the April 3 magnitude 7.2 earthquake caused an islandwide displacement.
According to the ministry, a geological survey, conducted from April 3 to 22, found significant displacement (移位) at 138 out of 247 satellite monitoring stations.
Those in Hualien were the most heavily impacted.
The interior ministry says Hualien's Shoufeng Township recorded the largest displacement before and after the earthquake, with a horizontal shift of 32.7-centimeters and a vertical lift of 39.3-centimeters.
The survey covered an area extending from Yilan to Hualien, Nantou and coastal areas in the east and detected smaller displacements in other regions.
The ministry says the displacements ranged from 1 to 4-centimeters in the north, between 1 and 6-centimeters in the west, and between and 1 and 2-centimeters in the south.
US Allies Seek Lower Tensions in Middle East

The United States and its allies are trying to dial down tensions in the Middle East.
They are concerned Iran will attack Israel, who it blames (責備) for last week's killing of Hamas' political leader in Tehran.

Nigeria Leader Calls for End to Mass Protests

Nigeria’s leader has called for an end to mass protests over economic hardship.
The protests, which began Thursday, continued Sunday after the Nigerian leader's request.
The protests have been accompanied by reports of looting and vandalism, as well as accusations that security forces have used excessive (過多的) force.
Amnesty International has reported the deaths of nine protesters in clashes with police, while another four were killed by a bomb.
The Nigerian police denied the Amnesty report.
The protests reflect frustration with the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation and accusations of misgovernment and corruption in Africa’s most populous country.
Belgium Triathalon Team Withdraws After One Falls Ill

Belgium’s Olympic committee announced Sunday that it would withdraw its team from the mixed relay triathlon at the Paris Olympics after one of its competitors who swam in the Seine River fell ill.
Claire Michel had competed in the women's triathlon Wednesday.
The statement from the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee said she was “unfortunately ill.”
The mixed relay triathlon is scheduled for today.
The statement did not elaborate on Michel’s illness but it comes after concerns (擔憂) over the river’s water quality.
