Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 111-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 23,446 on turnover of 6-billion N-T.

The market tumbled 200 points on Wednesday as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing extended losses from the previous session following reports one of its chips was found in a Huawei product - in possible violation of U-S export restrictions.

The bellwether electronics sector moved lower throughout the trading day - led by T-S-M-C - while old economy and financial stocks were largely muted, adding pressure to the broader market.


Court Delays Ruling Core Pacific City Detention Hearing

In news from about Taiwan this morning,

The Taipei District Court has delayed making a ruling on whether to extend the detention (延長羈押) order for Core Pacific Group Chairman Shen Ching-jing.

Shen has been detained since August in connection with the Core Pacific City case and prosecutors had requested an extension to his detention .

The district court has said it will now decide whether to extend the detention order before October 30.

Shen was the founder and chairman of the Core Pacific Group and prosecutors says he was involved in illegal dealings (非法交易) with high ranking officials in the Taipei City government, including then-mayor Ko Wen-je dating back to 2020.

Foreign Minister on a 10-Day Trip to Latin America and the Caribbean

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is making his first official visit to Taiwan's diplomatic allies in Latin America and the Caribbean since he took office in May.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Lai Ching-te has appointed (任命,指派) Lin as a special envoy to represent his government at celebrations to mark the 45th Independence Day of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The ministry says Lin is expected to meet with Governor-General Susan Dougan and Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves during that trip.

Lin is also scheduled to visit Guatemala, Saint Lucia, Belize, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Israeli jets have struck multiple buildings in Lebanon’s southern coastal city of Tyre, sending large clouds of black smoke into the air.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that an Israeli strike on the nearby town of Maarakeh killed three people.

There were no reports of casualties in Tyre, where the Israeli military had issued evacuation (撤離) warnings prior to the strikes.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group fired another barrage (密集攻擊) of rockets into Israel, including two that set off air raid sirens (引發空襲警報) in Tel Aviv before being intercepted.

This comes as Hezbollah confirmed that Hashem Safieddine, a top official widely expected to be the militant group’s next leader, had been killed in an Israeli strike.


Turkey explosion

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says an attack on the premises (場所) of the Turkish state-run aerospace and defense company TUSAS left four people dead and 14 wounded.

The mayor of the district of Kahraman-kazan in Ankara told The Associated Press that the attack on the company had abated (減少) but could not provide more details.

The interior minister said at least two of the attackers died. It's not clear who may be behind the attack.

Kurdish militants, the Islamic State group and leftist extremists (極端份子) have carried out attacks in the country in the past.

North Korea troops in Russia

U.S. and South Korean officials say there's evidence that North Korea has dispatched troops to Russia in a potential escalation (升高) of a nearly 3-year-old war with Ukraine.

It would be the first time a third country has put boots on the ground (參加地面戰) in the war.

Canada's Trudeau asked to step aside

Some lawmakers in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s own Liberal Party have asked the leader not to run for a fourth term Wednesday, handing him one of the biggest tests of his political career.

A smiling Trudeau said Liberals are “strong and united” after meeting with Liberal members of Parliament for three hours.

Three Liberals said they were among a total of 20 plus (超過二十個) lawmakers from the party to have signed a letter asking Trudeau to step down (下台) before the next election.

There are 153 Liberals in Canada’s House of Commons (眾議院).
