The Tai-Ex opened down 73-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 15,697 on turnover of 5.1-billion N-T.

The Tai-Ex closed slightly higher on Wednesday as investors locked in early gains ahead of the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday.

Market watchers say the bellwether electronics sector took a pause after a strong showing during the previous two trading sessions, and buying rotated to (轉向) select old economy and financial stocks, preventing the main board
broad from falling into negative territory.

U-S State Department spokesman Ned Price says Washington's 'One China' policy remains unchanged.

The statement comes a day after Price told reporters at a press briefing that the Biden administration is expressing its firm support for Taiwan and is also Beijing to cease (停止,中止) its military, diplomatic, economic pressure against the island.

Price didn't mention the 'One China' policy during Tuesday's briefing, but when pressed on the issue on Wednesday, he stressed that the U-S still supports the policy and it "has not changed."

A report by Bloomberg says that a record number of Hong Kong residents have relocated to Taiwan following Beijing's crackdowns on the city's protest movement sand the implementation (實行,履行.) of a new national security law.

Bloomberg says National Immigration Agency figures show that more than 10,800 Hong Kongers received Taiwan resident permits last year.

That figure was almost double the amount who relocated to the island in 2019.

And, citing immigration agency data, Bloomberg says the number of Hong Kongers relocating to Taiwan in 2020 is the highest in at least three decades based on figure dating back to 1991.

Myanmar police have leveled their first formal charge against ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Members of her party say she has been charged with possessing illegally imported walkie-talkies.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.

The move gives military leaders who staged a coup (軍事政變) a legal reason to hold her at least through the middle of the month.

Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since Monday when top generals announced they would take power for one year, accusing her government of not investigating the military's allegations of voter fraud in recent elections.

Suu Kyi's party swept that vote, and the military-backed party did poorly.

As talks continue over his pandemic rescue plan, US President Joe Biden is stressing both flexibility and urgency.

AP Washington correspondent Sagar Meghani reports.

Ten panda cubs made their debut in China's leading panda reserve Wednesday morning to mark the coming Lunar New Year.

The black-and-white cubs made their first public appearance in a playground with New Year's decorations at the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Bamboo baskets of treats were prepared for the pandas.

As of December, there were 44 panda cubs worldwide, and more than half were bred (繁殖) in China.
