The Tai-Ex opened up 395-points this morning from the close on the final trading session in the Year of the Rat at 16,197 on turnover of 18-billion N-T.

The local main board jumped more than 30-per cent during the Year of the Rat,despite the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing soared (猛增,驟升) about 90-per cent in the year.
The Central Epidemic Command Center reported no new coronavirus cases on Tuesday.

It was the fourth straight day when no new cases had been reported.

And that leaves the total number of cases here in Taiwan since the pandemic began at 937.

However, President Tsai Ing-wen is urging the public not to ignore (忽視) disease prevention measures simply because no new cases have been reported since last Friday.

Writing on her Facebook page, Tsai reminded the public to wear face masks and to wash their hands regularly.
Legislative Yuan Secretary-General Lin Jih-jia says constitutional amendments will be a major focus of the new legislative session.

Controversy over the issue of imported pork containing ractopamine led to the failure during the last legislative session to convene (召開,召集) the first meeting of the Legislative Constitutional Amendment Committee.

Lin says he believes the committee will meet in the coming weeks, as the list of members has now been approved.

However, according to Lin lawmakers from the ruling and opposition parties have yet to agree on a consensus regarding what issues the committee can discuss.

The United Nations says it is releasing $15 million from its emergency relief fund to help Guinea and Congo combat new outbreaks of Ebola.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric says the funding will help both countries respond to the outbreak and support neighboring countries to prepare.

This is the first time that Ebola has been recorded in Guinea since an outbreak that ended in 2016.

The West African nation officially declared it had an Ebola epidemic after at least three people died and four others became infected.

Neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia have put their citizens on high alert because of the situation in Guinea.

The three nations battled (鬥爭,奮鬥) the world's deadliest Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016, which began in Guinea and in which more than 11,300 people died.
The European Space Agency is holding its first astronaut recruitment drive in 11 years and says greater diversity is one of the goals.

The European equivalent of NASA is seeking to recruit more women astronauts this year, as well as people with disabilities who have always dreamed of going into space.

The application process, agency officials say, will take some 18 months before a handful (少數,少量) of astronauts are selected.

Out of 560 people who have gone into space, only 65 have been women.

Of those 65 women, 51 were American.

ESA has sent only two women into space.
