The Tai-Ex opened up 54-points this morning from Friday's close, at 16,908 on turnover of 5.6-billion N-T.

The market closed moderately lower on Friday as investors locked in early gains as the main board breached the 17,000-point mark at one point during the day's session.

However, large cap tech stocks came under pressure, while select old economy stocks, in particular those in the petrochemical sector, attracted (吸引;招引;引起) rotational buying, preventing the broader market from falling further.

Meanwhile,

The combined turnover of the weighted index and its over-the-counter market hit a new combined high of 563.42-billion N-T last Friday, as investors rushed to pocket earlier gains.

The Central Epidemic Command Center is reporting Taiwan's 11th coronavirus related death.

According spokesman Zhuang Ren-xiang, the infected patient died on April 9 and was a Taiwanese man in his 60s with a chronic illness.

He was confirmed positive for the virus on January 24, some five days after showing symptoms.

The man was one of the people who contracted (患上,感染(疾病)) the disease in a cluster infection at Taoyuan General Hospital, which infected a total of 21 people.

And officials say he died from pneumonia complicated by septic shock.

The Central Weather Bureau says a tropical disturbance in waters south of Guam could develop into a tropical storm in the coming days.

The tropical disturbance is currently moving in a northwesterly direction and will be called Surigae if it develops into a tropical storm.

If it does strengthen, it will be the second tropical storm of this year.

The weather bureau says it could develop into a storm by Wednesday or Thursday, but it's too early to say whether or not it will affect Taiwan.

The storm will not affect Taiwan if it turns in a northerly direction early and forecasters say even if it came close to Taiwan, its strength would likely be moderated after encountering (遇上,碰到) seasonal northeasterly winds.

Voters in Ecuador and Peru have cast ballots for new presidents.

The election comes amid a recent surge in COVID-19 cases in both countries that have prompted (引起;導致;激起) the return of lockdowns and heightened concerns over their already battered economies.

Ecuadoreans participated in a runoff Sunday between a conservative businessman and a protege of former leftist President Rafael Correa.

Peruvians chose from 18 candidates in the first round.

All seats in Peru's Congress also were being elected.

Elections officials in both countries ordered voters to wear masks and follow other public health guidelines.
