Japan Announces 2nd Vaccine Donation

發佈於 2021-06-25 13:45:04

Japan has announced that it will make a second donation (第二批的捐助) of 1-million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Taiwan.

Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu says the AstraZeneca vaccines will arrive in Taiwan sometime in mid-July.

This comes after Japan provided 1.24-million doses in early June.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the donation is a reflection of the solid ties between the two sides, and officials will remain in close contact with their Japanese counterparts to coordinate (協調) the delivery.

MOFA says more details concerning the shipment will be announced once they are finalized.

 Trapped Black Bear Makes Recovery

發佈於 2021-06-25 13:45:05

A Taiwan black bear that fell into a trap in Taitung has recovered following life-saving surgery.

The bear stumbled into a trap in the county's Haiduan township in December.

The bear was taken to the nearby WildOne Animal Rescue Hospital but the injury it sustained to its leg was so bad it had to be amputated (截肢).

It has since been cared for in captivity.

The Taitung Forestry Bureau said the bear went through a second health check in May, which found it had recovered well from the wound and fractures its leg endured.

It's been moved to an open 'training area' where it is learning to climb again and forage for food.

The bureau said the bear likes to climb high up trees and look around into the distance.

Chauvin could face decadeslong sentence in Floyd's death

發佈於 2021-06-25 13:45:06

In the U.S., former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is set to learn his fate, as a Minnesota judge sentences (判刑) him for murder in the death of George Floyd.

Today's hearing will take place at a county courthouse, which no longer has the concrete barricades or National Guard members that were in place as the U.S. waited for the verdict in Chauvin's trial.

The 45-year-old Chauvin faces decades in prison, with several legal experts predicting a sentence of 20 to 25 years.

He still faces a federal trial on civil rights charges in Floyd's death.
