發佈於 2021-07-08 13:53:04

210,000 people in Taiwan are currently on unpaid leave (無薪休假).

Statistics from the Ministry of Labor also show 1,883 companies have put workers on furlough, and all-time high for the island.

It marks an increase of 7,507 people on unpaid leave programs over the last period assessed.

It's also the highest number of people on furlough recorded this year.

The food and beverage and hotel industries account for the biggest proportion of companies implementing unpaid leave programs.

However, the number of furloughed workers in the manufacturing sector has decreased from 1,952 to just 951.

Department of Labor representative Huang Wei-chen said this is due to to one large company that employs over 800 people taking them off the furlough program.

Kaohsiung's Water Resources Bureau is working to prevent future flooding (淹水).

After a series of flooding incidents around the city during last month's Plum Rain Season, the Water Resources Bureau in Kaohsiung is seeking ways to improve water drainage infrastructure (排水結構).

The Bureau is seeking 9 million NT in funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, for reconstruction of streets and areas which often face issues of flooding during heavy rain.

Kaohsiung's Tongyan Road, which is low-lying and often flooded by waters from the nearby Dianbao river, has begun construction and expects to finish by the end of the year.

And a drainage review plan is also in the works for the nearby Linhai Industrial District.

發佈於 2021-07-08 13:53:04

Taitung's Fringe Festival (臺東藝穗節) will open at the end of the month.

The Taitung County Cultural Affairs Department says the festival, which features 11 acts, will begin performances on July 27th.

The department says the annual festival, which showcases plays and exhibitions that are non-traditional in style or subject matter, differs from other events, in that it happens outdoors.

They say the performers must take into account the surrounding environment, with limited control over lighting, sound and seating.

Organizers say the opening date for the festival this year was moved back due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

They say if the level 3 alert is eased on July 12th, the festival will continue following the new epidemic prevention measures for all its performances.

The medical system in Fiji (斐濟) is showing signs of strain as a coronavirus outbreak grows.

The Pacific island nation reported a record 791 new daily cases and three deaths.

The Ministry of Health says that due to the increase in cases, it will no longer test people for the virus in their homes in and around the capital.

The ministry has also suspended all pregnancy services (孕婦服務) in and around Suva until July 26th, saying people experiencing pregnancy emergencies or labor should go directly to Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Fiji has reported 59 deaths from COVID-19 since the outbreak of the delta variant began in April.

Home to 940,000 people, Fiji had reported just two COVID-19 deaths before that.

Adams' Win In NYC Latest In Surge For Moderate Democrats

發佈於 2021-07-08 13:53:05

The triumph of a moderate Democrat in the mayoral primary (市長初選) in deep blue New York City has appeared to accelerate a recent trend.

It's a trend of some of the most fervent Democrats to break away from the most progressive candidates.

A former New York Police Department captain, Eric Adams, this week became his party's nominee to lead the nation's largest city.

It's after he made it a centerpiece of his campaign to reject the left-leaning activist call to defund the police.
