Songshan CITYLINK Shuts Down After COVID-19 Case

Citylink Songshan Station Store in Taipei has shut down, after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.

The shopping center announced late last night that its 1st and 2nd floors would be closed for a day, and its 3rd floor closed for 3 days.

The statement comes after an employee at the Japanese retail store Muji, on the 3rd floor of the center, was confirmed infected.

The city's Department of Health says it is working to track down and test all those who may have come into contact with the patient.

And the facilities will be undergoing full disinfection (消毒) today.

 Malfunction at First Nuclear Power Plant

Officials say cooling systems are all in working order, after a malfunction (故障) at the First Nuclear Power Plant.

The Atomic Energy Council says the safety systems indicated a warning for the 2nd electrical bus at the Jinshan Plant in New Taipei's Shimen District.

The alarm caused power supply to halt, and automatically initiated emergency use of diesel generators to ensure that cooling systems at the nuclear plant continue running.

The AEC says engineers are on-site to monitor the situation, and investigate the cause of the supply bus malfunction.

The council says there is no danger at this time.

 President Tsai Reminds People To Take Typhoon Precautions

President Tsai is reminding Taiwan to prepare for the incoming typhoon.

As a sea warning has been issued for Typhoon In-Fa, and President Tsai Ing-wen is reminding everyone to practice disaster preparedness (防災準備).

She is calling on people to pay close attention to weather updates, drive carefully, and avoid beaches, and is also reminding people living in mountainous or low-lying areas to remain extra vigilant.

President Tsai points out that multiple other countries have faced heavy flooding and natural disasters this year, and that Taiwan must learn from their handling of these natural disasters.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, the typhoon is expected to reach Taiwan's east coast on the 23rd or the 24th, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

 U.S. And South Korea Agree To Convince North To Return To Nuke Talks

Top U.S. and South Korean officials agreed to try to convince North Korea to return to talks on its nuclear program (核計畫).

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman was in Seoul on Thursday as part of her tour in Asia.

Seoul says she and South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong decided to continue close consultations, to get North Korea to return to talks.

They agreed that dialogue is essential to achieve a shared objective of establishing complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

U.S.-led diplomacy, aimed at stripping North Korea of its nuclear program in return for economic benefits, have remained stalled for about 2 1/2 years.


 No. 2 U.S. Diplomat Sherman To Visit China As Tensions Soar

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman will travel to China, on a visit that comes amid increased tensions (政治緊張) between the U.S. and China.

Sherman will be the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit China since U.S. President Joe Biden took office.

The State Department said on Wednesday that Sherman will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and others in Tianjin on Sunday, as part of her Asia trip, which also takes her to Japan, South Korea and Mongolia.

The department says the discussions are part of efforts to hold ``candid exchanges'' with Chinese officials.

This week the U.S. accused China of hacking and indicted four Chinese nationals on charges they tried to steal U.S. trade secrets.


 China 'Shocked' By WHO Plan For COVID Origins Study

A senior Chinese health official says he was shocked by the World Health Organization's plan for the second phase of a COVID-19 origins study (新冠病毒來源調查).

Chinese National Health Commission Vice Minister Zeng Yixin dismissed the lab leak theory as a rumor running counter to common sense.

The head of the WHO acknowledged last week that it was premature to rule out a potential link, between the pandemic and a leak of the coronavirus from a Chinese lab.

Zeng called the theory a rumor that goes against science.
