The number of furloughed workers has hit a record high.

According to the Ministry of Labor's latest statistics, just under 45 thousand employees are currently on unpaid leave programs.

3,679 companies have workers on furlough.

Both those figures are the highest in Taiwan's history.

There are almost 13 thousand more furloughed workers compared to the week before, with 975 more companies implementing (實施) unpaid leave.

Companies in the hospitality sector remain the worst affected, while retailers and raw material providers were also impacted.

發佈於 2021-07-26 13:32:04

The Taipei Zoo has revealed the birth of another lockdown baby.

Zoo officials say a baby Chapman's Zebra was born earlier this month, and is now big enough to follow its mother out into the enclosure (圍欄).

Since the zoo closed its doors to visitors in mid-May because of the level-3 coronavirus restrictions, many animals have enjoyed the peace and quiet, and started exhibiting mating behavior.

Laughing kookaburra and Palawan-peacock-pheasant have reproduced for the first time at the Zoo, while black-capped squirrel monkey and meerkat also gave birth.

The Zoo will reopen to visitors this Sunday, but many exhibits and stores will remain closed.

A maximum of 3,600 people will be allowed in each day.

Masks will still be required at all times.

NZ to Repatriate Alleged IS Militant and Children

發佈於 2021-07-26 13:32:04

New Zealand has agreed to repatriate an alleged Islamic State militant and her two young children, who have been detained in Turkey since February.

The decision follows a bitter dispute with Australia over which country needed to shoulder responsibility for the woman.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she told Australia it should accept her since the woman lived in Australia since she was 6.

The woman had been a dual citizen but Australia stripped (除去) her citizenship under its anti-terrorism laws.

Ardern said anybody suspected of being associated with a terrorist group should expect to be investigated under New Zealand laws, although the case remained a matter for the police.

It was not clear whether the woman would face any charges in New Zealand.
