Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 35-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 17,245 on turnover of $4.3-billion N-T.
Last week, shares in Taiwan extended momentum from a session earlier, rising more than 100 points to close above 17,200 points Friday, as buying rotated to (轉向) non-tech stocks with the financial sector in focus.
However, turnover shrank as many investors stayed on the sidelines, waiting for a speech scheduled by U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell later in the day.

Shredded chicken laced with pork tests positive for ASF virus

Agriculture officials say packets of shredded chicken confiscated by Kaohsiung police last week have been found to contain (包含) pork and have tested positive for the African swine fever virus.
Police seized 40 packets of shredded chicken and 20 packets of beef jerky weighing a combined 17 kilograms in the dorm room of a Vietnamese migrant worker on Aug. 23rd.
The shredded chicken has tested positive for the ASF virus.
Taiwan has been on high alert against ASF after 71 kilograms of banned imported meat products from Vietnam were seized in New Taipei last week and were later found to contain the ASF virus.

Japan-based author first Taiwanese to win Akutagawa Prize

Japan-based writer Li Kotomi was awarded the Akutagawa Prize on Friday, becoming the first Taiwanese to capture the prestigious (聲望很高的) award recognizing talented up-and-coming authors.
She was picked for her work "An island where red spider lilies bloom," which was first introduced in the March edition of the Japanese literary magazine Bungakukai.
It tells the story of a matriarchal society on a fictional island between Taiwan and Japan, which poses questions about gender equality.
The young author, who was born in Taiwan in 1989 and moved to Japan to study in 2013, said she felt grateful for her multicultural background, which have become the "flesh and blood" of her literary works.

US Drone Strike Against IS Attackers

U.S. forces carried out (執行) a second drone strike against suspected Islamic State attackers Sunday in Kabul, but there are reports of civilian casualties.

Hurricane Nora Weakens Along Mexico Coast

Hurricane Nora has weakened to a tropical storm as it causes floods and landslides along Mexico's Pacific coast.
The Jalisco state government says a teenager from Spain died Saturday night when a hotel partially collapsed in Puerto Vallarta amid severe (嚴重) flooding when Hurricane Nora passed by the tourist city just offshore.
A woman was also missing in the city after her car was swept away.
Officials say flooding damaged 500 homes and two people were injured in a landslide.
Six fishermen from the state of Guerrero also are reported missing at sea.
Denmark Scientists Discover Northernmost Island

A team of Arctic researchers from Denmark say they have accidentally discovered what they believe is the world's northernmost island located off Greenland's coast.
The scientists from the University of Copenhagen were on an expedition last month when they initially (最初) thought they had arrived at Oodaaq.
That island was discovered by a Danish survey team in 1978.
They instead wound up on an undiscovered island further north.
The tiny island was apparently discovered as a result of shifting pack ice.
But the research team reportedly doesn't consider the discovery to be a result of climate change.
